The last time I used MS Office was 2002, after that I only use Open Office and currently use it on Ubuntu and on Windows its the Go OO which is OO made by the same guys who make it for Ubuntu.

While there is no "best" of anything, I use Abiword Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable) for fast word processing work on the road.
I also have MS Office 2003 and use OpenOffice.org Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable) occasionally as well.

Using StarOffice, thus voted OO.
Doubt it is the "best", but is quite adequate for my needs.
PS: No Corel Wordperfect? I'm sure they still have some devotees.

MS Office 2002 with XP and StarOffice with Vista. Some people say that MS Office 2002 should be compatible with Vista, I couldn't install it myself, and I don't see why I should buy the latest MS Office simply because I have Vista.

It's fine...what was the issue you had?

I don't need a full office suite, so AbiWord is perfect for me.

The installation starts normally, after a couple of minutes when it starts transferring files it stops and reports an unknown error. The installation CD is more than 6 years old so it is possible that the CD itself might be too old, although it looks in excellent condition. I should also add that I'm very happy with StarOffice and its very reasonable price.

UAC on? Launching installation in compatibility mode? If Star works for you..great...but just to note, Office XP does install and run fine in Vista.

I sometimes use Office 2007 as I got it pretty much free from work. But I have used Ashampoo 2006 and it is my favorite freeware word processing program.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried them all, and I really think the installation CD is damaged.

For word processing, I use Word Perfect more than Microsoft but use but use Excel over Quatro Pro.

I voted Abiword, but I like the basic Rich Text document the most, Microsoft Office just gets on my nerves, I would choose Portable Abiword or Portable openoffice, over microsoft office anyday!
I also like Power Notes, and the note feature in Opera for taking notes!

Once you get into latex, you'll see how your productivity goes up 400%. And you simply can't compare the quality of output. Check out my Apache guide on me website and see the quality of rendering of computer modern or latin modern fonts. Arial, Times and others are cartoon fonts in comparison.

Lyx for math, OO for rest, Abiword is excellent if all one needs is a WP, it handles all formats with ease, even more than OO.

I use Microsoft Word 2007, because of it's user-friendly interface. The tabs makes it much easier and time-efficient to make documents.
And the polls don't lie ;D

what people use and what people think are the best are two different things.
ms word 07 is probably the best based on features but in my opinion open office is the one to go for since it is a free package of word/draw/math/impress and more which are similar to the ms office package but free.
also it is totally compatible with ms office and most word processors

for business/office use ms office or open office will do good. but for home use, as long as it covers the basics and long as it's free, any decent app will do fine.

I'm surprised at the results. Mostly I use MS Wordpad, occasionally MS Office XP.
So no one uses Wordpad any more?

I use Jarte Pro. It is easy to use; it integrates in it my dictionary, WordWeb Pro, my thesaurus, Mobysaurus Thesaurus, and an online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. I only have to push a button to open them. WordWeb Pro also opens when I select a world to look up and Control and RightClick. In the Jarte Pro you can program the dictionary , thesaurus, and encyclopedia buttons. The free Jarte you can't.
Check out Jarte and Jarte Pro, (http://www.jarte.com/) unless you work in a corporate office you will never use a Microsoft processor again.
Before Jarte I used Rough Draft (http://www.salsbury.f2s.com/rd.htm); it's also a good word processor. Either is one is better than Word for most folk. They are not bloated with the bells and whistle that you don't use or need. Writers should use Jarte or Rough Draft.

openoffice. Free and adequate for what I need. I'm linux only btw and, while I do a lot of work with the .doc format, there usually is not too much formatting involved, so OO does what I need.

Softmaker Office 2008. Got it free. MS compatible and only uses 38MB of disk space (for WP, SS, and DIC. That is all I use - it also has DB and Presentation plus multi-language if wanted). Ashampoo sells a newer model under the Ashampoo name.
