I'm looking for a bootable anti-virus that I can put on CD or a USB flash drive to clean out a Windows machine. I did a search here, but only found posts from three years ago. Any suggestions?

Something like this:
http://www.avira.com/en/company_news/rescue_cd_.html

But these solutions have no auto-update function...every time you have to download the latest ISO to get the latest virus definitions.

Or this:

DrWeb LiveCD (http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/)

There's a newer version of F-Secure's Rescue CD since november 2008. You can get v3.01 here (http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/2008/11/25/rescuecd-301-released/).

Nice thread. Wich of these boot cds can replace infected system files?

Good experience with F-Secure's Rescue CD here, however the signature downloads are quite big so a fast connection without a data limit is recommended (please note it's also possible to put the latest signatures on a flashdisk!). If you have with a slow connection or a data limit I would recommend Dr. Web's live-cd instead.

Hmm. Replace an infected system? The best replacement is a clean image. Repairing an infected hard drive can be done by many antiviruses BUT, there is always a doubt if every infection is gone (at least, for me). A clean image is the way to go. I did not mean to highjack this thread but "pre" is much better than "post".

You can also restore some system files using the recovery console ( boot from windows dvd ) but it does not always produce the desired result out of the box.

Images are cool, but there is also a different approach like the one offered by software like Rollback RX.

Alternatively just create a UBCD4Win cd and have an array of updateable AV/AS tools on the one disk.It comes with AntiVir,KVRT, ASquared,SAS,Spybot...etc by default. In addition to these I added plugins for DrWeb,Sophos,MBAM and VIPRE.;)
