View Full Version : An issue and a question

The issue: every time I reboot the PC after a protected session I get a message that Trend Micro Internet Security has reverted to the previous update because of system instability caused by the latest update (or something like that). Do you have any idea why this may be happening and if I should do something about it or not worry? I expect that any definitions etc that are lost this way are loaded at the next update.
The question: On Jan 30 I purchased a licence for Returnil and was wondering if the latest version upgrade is free or if there is a charge for it. I have not gotten around to upgrading (actually forgot about it) but just read in another thread that upgrading is advised.

I'll let Mike answer your question :)

The issue, could probably be solved if you update Trend in the real system.
Reboot PC and again in the real system do another update of Trend. It should say you are up-to-date.
Turn protection back on. Reboot again.
Most likely, a previous update didn't install properly.

I don't think this is the case since it only happens, and it happens almost every time I reboot to get out of Returnils protected state. I suspect that TM sees the reboot as being due to some sort of instability but why it would thinks its due to an update of its files is beyond me.

Hi bgoodman4,

Yes, if you are still within the subscription period you should have recieved an upgrade notice with a new Serial Number (check your mail filters). If you accidently deleted the mail let me know and I can help.
Your current 2.0.0 Serial Number is still valid for the upgrade and can be used in the interim.

Yes, the updates would be reapplied when you restarted your computer and the automatic updating feature in your AV noticed the definitions are out-of-date. This is expected behavior as all changes not specifically saved to the real system will be lost at restart.
I am not personally familiar with TM so cannot say specifically why this message is given other than there may be some form of on-line verification with Trend that generates this error message if the update server believes that it sent you the update(s) already. This in theory could cause the server to assume that the previous update sent was damaged or corrupted in some way rather than the actual situation where the change itself was reverted to when you turned protection on.

Hi Mike,
Purchased on July 30, 2008 but have not received an email or serial number. However this is not a problem as I have already upgraded and it registered with the old information. Was wondering if there are issues with some email addresses not receiving update notices.
Thanks,
John

Hi john10882,
Yes, we recieved a number of delivery failures after we sent out the upgrade notice. Use the form on the following page (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/contacttech.php) to ask for your e-mail to be resent or an updated address we can use. Please include your CleverBridge purchase number, registered name, and registered e-mail at time of purchase.
Even though the e-mail address may be different now, it will help locate your account faster.
Mike
