View Full Version : OSS ignores my modifications to XP's boot.ini

Whatever change I make to Windows XP's boot.ini (I'm trying to add the recovery console), after a reboot OSS (from DD10) restores the old version of boot.ini, effectively removing all my changes...
Why does it do this?
How can I prevent that?
EDIT: the old version is (twice!) in the C:\BOOTWIZ directory - if I edit that it works; but why should I?

You have to edit the boot.ini file that OSS saves. You can do this by starting OSS, going into the properties for the OS entry and selecting the file from the list.
As far as I know, OSS is supposed to detect changes to the booting files and update them when the changes occur. However, it doesn't seem to work properly and the changes get discarded.

Adding the Recovery Console is fairly easy. You should be able to follow the instructions shown here (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=179471#8). If you don't want a separate OSS menu entry for the Recovery Console, just modify the boot.ini files as needed.

That was the workaround I mentioned.
On the other hand, this bug might be useful: can I make two OSS entries for the same partition with different boot.ini files?
Then I could start the recovery console immediately from OSS... (I would make two boot.ini files; one which immediately starts XP, the other which immediately starts the recovery console)
EDIT: Cool, that's actually what you mention (I thought it was your signature and skipped it at first sight...)
