If you have POP3/HTTP scanning enabled, it's certainly another application that attempts to connect there.

Why don't you install wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org)? Then you can see what's in the data being sent. (Sorry but I can't teach you to use wireshark if you haven't used it before.)
