It'll change (more on msfn) according to current positioning - hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\streams\desktop

Use a program that takes a snapshot of the registry, change stuff, take 2nd snapshot and compare. This will show you where activity is.

I use InstallRite to do mine, but there are many available.

Not to worry, those settings are typically unavailable (http://forums.pcworld.co.nz/showpost.php?p=506152&postcount=5). "Drag n'drop" as you wish and let Taskbar Plus (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm) handle the rest.
Should you encounter problems maintaining the order across boots - see the previous link or refer to this post (http://www.d-a-l.com/help/windows-xp-help/14376-quick-launch.html#post31700).

Excellent resource GlobalForce, thanks for the mention. Learned a ton of ins and outs from that board myself.

Then they're guilty of offering the user too many options, ay? Shame on'em!
