The file 'lnsfw.sys' on LNS Driver Disk is needed

Hello,
The title says it all.
I've been using LNS 2.05b1 fine for quite a while - noticed the update out so downloaded it. Uninstalled the old LNS, rebooted, and ran the new .exe. But, it want's a 'driver disk' - I don't know what this is. Also, when I then tried to re-install b1, the same problem came up.

Any suggestions on how to solve this appreciated !

I tried your advice, and various similar paths but with no luck. The message comes up as soon as the install starts. A 'Driver Installation' box pops up after I fail to point to the correct driver location, saying '..failed. Error code: 0x800704c7.
Oh and I can't point at the install .exe file.

I've tried numerous reboots/un-installs and re-installs... I really don't understand!

WiXP - WUpdate all up to date.
The main thing I don't get was why the install worked originally - I installed b1 just fine - but can't re-install it!

Go into Device Manager and enable "Show hidden Devices" and check for improperly install Devices

All devices seem fine. I have a Bluetooth and LAN Card device under 'networking' - and both are 'enabled' and 'working'.

Thanks, did you say you browsed to %systemroot%\system32\drivers\ and selected that driver and click OK?

I browsed to that folder, yes, but the file doesn't exist.

Interesting, can you check to see if that driver had been placed onto the C:\ and in the \drivers\ location?

I may be wrong, but i think it may have to-do with the drive you want Look 'n' Stop to Install on...

If you like, send me and E-mail and i'll send you the driver and you apply manually... Or you can wait til tomorrow morning for Frederic the author to arrive and fix the problem with the Installer...

Hi,
Thanks for the email. I placed the driver in the /system32/drivers/ folder, and the install went fine. Rebooted, and upon start up lns failed because it failed to load lnsfw driver. Both lnsfw.sys and lnsfw1.sys are in the folder, the install must have placed the lnsfw1.sys there.

So, now I've no idea at all what's up!

That's the message i'm getting now, yes. However, I follow the link and there's no advice on how to fix the problem, other than to re-install... Which I've tried now. Still no luck. On another note, I get no hardware/device signing messages etc when installing. I am logged in as administrator.

Have you tried Installing Look 'n' Stop v2.05b2 over ontop of the current Install and re-boot the Machine?

Okay, many thanks for your help! It's a very odd problem...

Just for interest:
I tried copying lnsfw.sys to c:\ and uninstalling lns. Then, after reboot, I tried to re-install lns2.05b2 and when it asked for the location of lnsfw.sys, I point to c:\, and that is fine, however it then asks for the location of another file, an inf - something like lnsfw_m.inf - and obviously I don't have this. Though I'm pretty sure it's in the install/setup exe... So, I 'cancel' the install, and the installer say's lns is installed successfully (bug?). I then re-run 2.05b2 installer, and as lnsfw.sys is in /drivers/ it doesn't ask me for it, and doesn't ask for anything else either. The install say's it worked fine, althought it doesn't ask me to reboot (?). Anyway, I do, and still no luck!

I'm completely defeated by this odd problem!
Maybe it's just because it's 20 to 5am here!

Hi,

I've already encountered this issue once.
You should try to enter the location where Look 'n' Stop is being installed (d:\program files\looknstop in your case) when windows prompts you for the folder location.

Hi dave1006,

I'm trying to understand in which circumstances this problem occurs.

My suggestion is the problem happens after a complete uninstallation, then a reinstallation but in a different folder than the initial installation (for instance if you installed Look 'n' Stop first in d:\program files\soft4ever\looknstop, and the second time in d:\program files\looknstop).

Could you confirm that ?

The problem seems also be linked to a .inf driver installation file which has been slightly modified in the 2.05b2.

Hi Frederic,

I'm pretty sure I have always had lns in the same folder/drive. A give away was the fact that the raw rule edit plugin was left behind/still in the folder from the previous install.
Although during the 'troubleshooting' I did try to install to different places.

If you'd like I can uninstall then re-install somewhere else to test the thoery.
