Two questions:
1. Is it possible for a USB flash drive without an autorun.inf file to infect a system with malware once the USB flash drive is mounted?
2. What software do you use to guard yourself against this?

No, as long as you don't attempt to run the file. Here is a malware sample I've had on my Flash drive for a couple of days. It can sit there forever and not bother anyone unless clicked-to-open:

Also, if the drive is not the U3 type, even with an AutoRun.inf file you are safe because it won't execute any way.

If i buy a U3 i always reformatt and remove it so it's a single Pen Drive, on the other hand i also been gathering at great discounts Kingston 2 GB's at a whopping 5 dollars at Walmart.
