Linux Mint 6.0 Felicia - Minty and sweet

Hi all,

I have reviewed Linux Mint 6.0 Felicia, the latest Mint release. It's very nice!

I already use its KDE Edition, and its Main Live CD, and was a nice pleasure.
Its community is also good, so for those that like Ubuntu and Gnome this is a great distro!

With Mandriva, these distros are very easy to use with excellent tools.

I have actually reverted back to Ubuntu after a 6 or so months with Mint.

I dont need 3rd party drivers so the mint driver tools are useless.
I prefer the default gnome clearlooks theme.
I have issues with Mint 5 and 6 update tool not showing updates.
If I then use synapatic it will install updates that mint update failled to recognise.
I was told to use the mint add/remove tools, which is slow and only lists a selection of available packages.

Apart from that Mint is really good, I just found it less time and effort to take Ubuntu than Mint to get my idea configuration and setup as I tweak quite a few things. Its not that Mint is no good, but I have found Ubuntu is catching up to Mint IMO compared to 2 years ago.
But Mint does come nicely setup with common extras missing from Ubuntu, multimedia codecs, flash player and Java.

I am happy leaving my Wife with Mint, as its 100% unmolested and has everything she needs out of the box.

PS, Another good review, did you notice that bug with MintUpdate not showing all updates until you sudo'd it ?

Have you tried Super Ubuntu? IMO, it gives you the best of both Mint and Ubuntu.

Seems like there's no need for it any longer.
They've taken Ubuntu code more closely this time.

Such a beautiful, evocative name "Linux Mint" - I hope to find a magazine
with the CD like I did with CentOS. Problem here is I have only 3GB limit
(the premium package!) with my ISP. Can buy extra GB's but quite pricey.

Congrats on the review, I see the Linux Mint site also refers to it.

Mint was slowly forking away from Ubuntu, it was forked a fair few versions ago and the core system was slowly diverging, but they still used the main packages.
So to ease workload and allow them to concentrate on the mint tools more each version of mint will be directly built on top of the latest Ubuntu (will be ubuntu + extra packages and some config tweeks). Side effect is makes upgrading easier (though i find it far quicker to backup and fresh install) and keeping sync with new features of Ubuntu.
