Application Layer Gateway Service?

I never find any clear answer of this so therefor i ask here.
Do i need or must have (alg.exe) Application Layer Gateway Service running in XP?
Should it be set on Auto, or manual, or disable it when i use Eset Smart Security?

I have ESS 3.0.684.0 installed
OS: XP Pro SP3
