Sometimes cd/dvd burners are picky about which media they like. Have you tried another brand of DVD?
You may also look for new firmware for your burner which may correct the problem.

What make is it? Go to the main website of the supplier (for example http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Shop/DVD-Burners/Lightscribe+DVD+Burners) and look under support for firmwear driver updates. Also dont throw out thos DVD's yet

You'll wanna run this to determine fw version - http://hijacker.rpc1.org/discinfo/
Any chance your box is a Dell (http://www.storageupdates.philips.com/en/oem_sdvd8820.html)? How 'bout DVD movies, she see them OK?
