Firewall + AV replacement for NIS and KIS?

I'm looking for a suitable replacement for NIS 2009 and KIS 2009 for my system. Unfortunately Norton completely corrupted my XP (multiple times) while I get random missing system32 files @ Windows start-up with Kaspersky.

Maybe it's just my system, but I can't get either of those security suites work properly.

I'm looking for a good FIREWALL and ANTI-VIRUS combination that is light on system resources, effective and reliable and FREE.

I'm using XP (sp3). Please recommend me something that can replace Norton and Kaspersky and offers solid protection for my system.

Consider suites from other manufacturers: McAfee, CA, Trend Micro, F-Secure. They are all good choices.

These 3 should do nicely, they are all the freeware editions of there big brothers.

Anti-Virus: Avira
Firewall: Online Armor
Behavioural detection: Threatfire

If its free you could do no worst than Avast and Mbam, although it will depend on what op system your running, memory etc. for better advice should you need it

By asking for FREE you are really limiting what is out there suite wise.

I would try either:
1) Comodo lnternet Security (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html)

2) A free AV Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) or Avira (http://www.free-av.com/) with a free firewall such as Comodo above (same link - just choose not to install the AV) or Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)

if your looking for a suite, i suggest you look at Avira Premium Security suite, although its firewall isnt the best, it does provide sufficient protection, and there AV makes up for it anyways. out of all the suites ive tried, Avira firewall gave me the least slowdowns on internet.

My setup (or some of it, anyway) is in my sig.
Never given a significant problem.
Avast covers a good range of malware, with built in antirootkit scanner and antispyware, TF should hopefully cover malware behaviour for which there is no signature yet, was using Comodo FW, and whilst OK, I got a bit sick of its failure to "remember this answer"; PCtools runs light and appears effective.

I'm not one of these folk that goes experimenting with trojans etc, so I haven't personally acid - tested this setup.
With regular browsing and some p2p + emails etc I've never been infected. Avast has stopped a few, just enough to remind one that the www can host diseases, the webshield has blocked a few sites, the hosts file a few more, TF has so far only popped warnings when installing or running unknown software, like rootkit analyzers.

Something must have been wrong with your system previous to installing NIS 2009 or KIS 2009. I have NIS 2009 right now on my computer without any issues. KIS 2009 I've got to admit will slow your internet download a little bit, that is it.

If I were you I would do a clean install of windows and re-install NIS 2009 or KIS 2009 and then get Acronis True Image for windows peace of mind. However, if you want to replace these two great products why don't you try Avira Premium Security Suite or Outpost Security Suite 2009.

This alone would provide excellent protection, but id also suggest adding SandboxIE and you'll have an extremely light and solid setup.

* AVIRA Antivir Personal + RISING AV Free Edition (for scripts & e-mail + on-demand + on-boot scan + scheduled memory scans), or AVAST for all this.
+Spybot Search & Destroy or aSquared Free.

FIREWALL
* RISING FW Free Edition, or PC Tools Firewall Plus Free, or COMODO Internet Security (enable just you need, HIPS Defense+, AV realtime or on-demand..), or OnlineArmor Free (FW + HIPS).

HIPS/IDS/BEHAVIOR
* EQSecure with Alcyon's rule sets (HIPS) or/with ThreatFire Free, System Safety Monitor Free Edition (HIPS), or COMODO Internet Security with Defense+ (HIPS) enabled, or OnlineArmor Free.

This setting should provide you a stellar security.:)

Now on topic, I would like to see everyone save a little green and start thinking about security a little differently. Conventional thinking leads people to scanner and other signature based solutions that have proven that they cannot be very effective. Everyone's first and primary security tool should be an imaging program, followed by Sandboxie, then whatever else you like that will add to this setup. There is no need for redundancy.
