I have IE7 running in protected mode with Vista Ultimate. Is this effectively a sandbox? Is there any real benefit in running sandboxie?

Others have asked this question, and I have not noticed anyone posting an answer. I would like to know this too.

I think the keywords here are, "It doesnt protect against all"
Protected Mode is an important step forward in security for Internet Explorer (IE); it helps protect users from attack by running an IE process with greatly restricted privileges on Windows Vista. While Protected Mode does not protect against all forms of attack, it significantly reduces the ability of an attack to write, alter, or destroy data on the user's machine or to install malicious code.

Since not all malware requires administrative privileges Sandboxie offers a superior degree of protection, almost bulletproof with a few rule tweaks.;).IMHO Sandboxie is the greatest single security application there is.

Yep..That answers on my behalf as well.privillage reduction(protected mode : on) only disables ability to write stuff on areas like c:/windows , c:/Program Files and a few registry,modify-shut-create processes/services/registry entries(not all)..malware classified as usermode malware can still work as intended..
Sandboxie does exactly what a condom does.Pretty much has the same fail rate% as condoms as well (97-99% effective)..Yea i use that browser condom myself too.
If u have not tried the latest version,be ready for a pleasant surprise on speed.

I'm not sure if it's due to it's bland, uninspiring look or not but Sandboxie doesn't seem to get given the mainstream acclaim that it undoubtedly deserves, apart from on specialist forums such as this one.:-\
