I just downloaded it from here (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/3.0b1-candidates/build1/), but will not get to install until a few hours from now :(

That's a nightly build - a pre-release candidate for community testing purposes.
There's no 'Beta' release just yet.

Right. But based on this (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases) it would seem that an early December release is still a reasonable hope.
