Need suggestions for anti-spyware/malware

I have NOD32 for an AV, my web browsing is moderately tame. I've used Spybot and Ad-Aware in the past, and was going to update both of them, as I haven't used either for some time, and they both get not so great reviews anymore, so figured I'd check here for suggestions. That Malwarebytes sounds pretty good.....any feedback or other suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

You could even choose a 3rd program (HIPS) to backup anythingh else, for instance: Prevx Edge Or Defensewall

Thanks! Would you say those two are close to equal as far as quality, and are the paid versions of either/both much better?

I agree with GesPor both excellent products.The paid versions are realtime guard.The free versions do not offer realtime,its on demand scans only and manual updating of its database.

+1 for SAS and/or MBAM.
No reason not to have both, if you want.
Both highly respected and regarded.
Also worthy of consideration is A2 (Asquared). Has had a bit of a rep for false positives in the past. Has also helped me in the past.

Which one would you say is better, SAS or MBAM ? Also, If I used one og these, would windows defender be basically useless, or should I keep it?

I would say MBAM. Because it caught the Trojan.DNSChanger on my computer that SAS did not.

I would say there are likely hundreds of examples similar to the one above. Some will be more in favour of MBAM, some will be more infavour of SAS.
Truth probably is something like: with independent and unbiased testing quite difficult for this type of application, it's almost impossible to know which is better. On one day, against one kind of malware, MBAM might be better. On another, SAS might be.
They're both very good.
Get 'em both.

Like everyone else had said before, your best bet is the top contenders:

Super Antispyware
MBAM
Ewido Micro Scanner


Though ewido isn't a MUST, its something to keep around once in a while.

So other than no realtime protection,and no automatic updating of the database, SAS and MBAM free versions have the same features?? I may buy one to have the realtime protection, and get the other free, so which one is the easiest on the system as far as cpu usage?

Keeping your existing AV, I would advise the following - in order of preference:

1) A-Squared - full verion has a HIPS (mamutu) built in.
2) Prevx Edge

You could just dump NOD and go for Avira - which is cheaper than 1 and 2 above. With Avira, you will be very well protected.

If money is an isue, Avira has a free version - which is pretty much as good as the paid and you could run A2 free as an on demand.

Though both are effective products, as I believe another poster said one can miss what the other catches and besides they compliment each other but would suggest only one as real time the other for OD.IMO you can not go wrong with either one.SAS has a trial version of realtime and I believe MBAM doesn't offer a trial of realtime which IMO sucks because can not experince How it impacts your system or experience how it runs along side other security you may have at the time.Perhaps I am wrong about MBAM but I do not see realtime trials.

MBAM on my system takes max 25MB RAM (mbamservice.exe), and ~4MB RAM (mbamgui.exe) and when i look at the task manager there i always see 0% usage CPU, but summary time of the CPU usage is ~14sec. (6h after reboot)

Well scanners still have there place,Last night for example I was downloading music from limewire and one song had a nice little trojan awaiting for me inside.Eset detected it and quarantined it.

Perhaps try some thing simple such as firefox with no script and adblock plus. also dump your cookies on closing firefox . Nod is generally thought to be a good av so should catch pretty much what any av would catch. I have a lifetime licence for SAS but wont use it any more as Its not necesary with firefox/noscript/ adblock and dump cookies. MBAM is good and doesnt create a slow down on updates on my dial up connection like SAS does . ( if I were to utilise it on my system). There is always a tendancy to add more and more software which in itself often creates more problems than the first.

I believe you are smart to look for alternatives to Spybot and Ad-Aware; they need a major overhaul in order to become viable again. To be perfectly honest, I feel absolutely the same way about Ewido, but the online scanner takes up almost no HD space and has never in my experience caused a problem.

Along with the antispyware program(s) you are considering, I would add a dedicated antirootkit application from Sophos, F-Secure, or Avast which is based on GMER according to their website. I run one of those on each of my installs regardless of whether the antivirus application I'm using has antirootkit capability. A second opinion gives peace of mind, if nothing else.

As has already been suggested (and it's a good suggestion IMO), have your browser set to clear cookies on closing and I usually run CCleaner following browser close to eliminate temporary files.

I like to keep things tidy !
