What exactly do we miss with Avira free beside the fact that there is no AS coverage?

My understanding is there are nag screens whenever an update is made?

This explains:

The updates are laborious and slow.
A big popup appears to suggest upgrading to the paid versions.

Other than that it's 100% functional, minus the AS as you said.
It's an AV only.

I believe Avira Free is also missing the email and web scanner as well.......

They've upgraded their servers,so updating is no longer "slow"

Regarding the "nag screen", there are ways to disable those as well.

what about the web scanner? in terms of security does it mean anything serious? i don't care about AS since i have the ZA pro with real time AS protection. Am i protected or in danger?

I had a lot of problems with the update, that's why I cancelled it

Nice program, but the daily pop-up screen is too much. I can understand once a week or so.

The consensus would be no although some experts disagree, supposedly theres some malware wich can be caught only by the webscanner but someone else might be able to bring up a former post about it.

Both! :argh:

It's a nice feature to have to protect your browsing IMO. It's not absolutely essential if you don't want it, but it can't hurt that for sure. It's nice to catch things before they hit your HD for one thing. There has been tons of debate on it, and it always boils down to whether you want it or not for your particular needs. Some don't need it. It also usually takes a slight hit on browser speed/performance, although Avira's is very good in that regard, as is Avast's. Others will take a noticeable toll on your browsing performance.

So, bottom line, it's up to you, and should be based on your needs...

i have installed the Avira suite without the firewall and the suite itself doesn't make any difference as far as i see. I kept the ZA pro with the AS inactive and there is everything ok as for now

For the free program too?
I understand they give priority update servers to paid consumers, but never heard of a recent overhaul of the free update servers.

Thanks!

Servers for the free version were upgraded earlier this year and run smoothly as far as I'm concerned. Priority is given to the paid version, but is that really an issue ?
The free version gets at least one automatic update per day by default and can be manually updated at any time.

Absolutely no problems here !

Couple Avira free with high heuristics and Threatfire. They play well together and offer some good protection. I have this combo on my wifes pc and no problems whatsoever.

The Free version doesn't detect Spyware according to their site. Avast is a better choice because it covers more threats.
