I just noticed an empty folder in my C: root - C:\OpenCandy. It was created 2008/11/10. There are no other folders/files on my system matching this name.

Googling gives lots of pages with repetitive comments apparently originating from the home site: http://opencandy.com/. One page points out that this is adware and apparently installs itself when you download some other package.

There are registry entries under,
HKLM\Software\OpenCandy,
HKEY_USERS\..\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars

I don't see any way to de-install the package. Nothing on the minimalist blog. Very poor manners!

I'd also like to find out which package carried this as a payload - I'll be sure to rant, etc. when I uncover it. Probably can do via the datetime stamp on the root folder and my installation history.

Looks like it came in with installation of Miro - now to get them to admit it.

I received a very rapid series of replies from the "Participatory Culture Foundation (Miro)" that indicated they are working at resolving this issue.

Very impressive service.

My thread on on the GetSatisfaction.com site (Part.Cult.Found) is:

I'll mark this as resolved once they have finished their update.

See if Malwarebytes anti-malware will wack it for you.

Thanks for the reference to this package - I wasn't aware of it before. It did not detect OpenCandy as malware.

I think OpenCandy represents a new type of value-added component that is AdWare but is supposed to be helpful within the OSS community. I hate to "mitch-and-boan" too much about things that help OSS, but this is also done with an obvious profit motive, also.
