Well...

I'm not sure if the same thing has just happened to me :'(

My little lad just went to go on the Desktop Computer.
He opened IE7 ... Then ... " MUM "
There was a Window From AVG 8 - Paid .
Saying something like...
Trojan
PSW Flash 10
Windows 32
Oh God!
I Don't Know!
It was something like that :'(

Did I Panic ... Yes!
It was only after I'd said Yes ... Remove ... I remembered that report about AVG 8 killing a computer :-[

Note!
It Did NOT give me the option to - Heal ... Only - Remove

It said it couldn't remove it all :doubt:

I've Shutdown the computer ... And started it up again.
Thank God!
It has come back on - Fine

I'm Scared To Death :'(
Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
I can't stop shaking :(

I Only Installed Firefox 3.0.3 .. Two Days Ago.
Updated to Firefox 3.0.4 .. This Morning.
Could that have something to do with it?
Firefox is still working :-\

your probably fine but to make sure, go to Kaspersky Of F-Secure & do an online scan if you want a comfirmation that nothing is on your machine, good luck...

Well the Full Scan with AVG 8 - Paid has just finished!
Nothing Found :-\

Now I'm worrying...
Was the Window saying I had a Trojan - Real :(

I Mean...
My eyesight is so bad .. I often miss important things :(
I had my 12 year old saying " Oh God Mum .. Does this mean I can't use the computer "
And To Top It All Off....
I haven't got a clue what a Virus Alert from AVG 8 is supposed to look like?
I've never had a Virus / Trojan Alert Before.

There is nothing showing up in the Virus Vault :what:
But then again...
It didn't give me the option to heal.
Only - Remove

run a scan with Drweb's free utility, Cureit.

Personally, i wouldnt take avg's answer as gospel, i do like their software but ive had a few bad false alarms and failures of removal in the past, its always best to get a 2nd opinion.

Zeena, don't panic.
The issue that you quoted was a serious one but it only affected users of some non-English systems and it was serious because it hit a Windows system file. Typically, when you see a detection, it has nothing to do with system files so it typically has no impact on Windows installation. Even if it is a false alarm, which sometimes happens to all AV vendors.

Now to your particular issue, this was a false alarm on one of the Adobe FlashPlayer update files. This false alarm was fixed by another update, that was released within an hour or so later. This explains why the scan of your system did not detect anything.

What else could I do?
When it was telling me I'd got a Trojan :argh:
And it wasn't giving me the option to - Quarentine
AV's should come with a .. ( Let Me Think About It ) .. Button ;)

Once my subscription runs out... AVG 8 - Is Out Too!

Trouble was...
It did look like AVG 8 was trying to take out - Windows ::)
I just remember bits like...

When I Shutdown My Computer...
I really wasn't expecting it to come back on again :(

Thank God! ... It Did! :D


The update that caused the problem ... Must have come in around 3pm :-\
Then when AVG 8 had tried to kill the non existent Trojan >:(
And I Shutdown my Computer - To see if it would ever come back on again...
When I Booted Back Up - AVG 8 would have looked for new updates ... Giving me the - Fix!


I just need a Fix for my migraine now ::)

I'm just really hopeing... It hasn't done any damage :doubt:

Flash seems to be working - OK
But You Know Computers...
It can be weeks before you realise something isn't working like it used to :'(

Zeena, if AVG did alert you about a Trojan, have you looked at the Virus Vault to see if it's still there?
Usually, AVG automatically removes any intruders to the vault, even if you get a warning message.

Zeena, you might want to think about installing sandboxie (www.sandboxie.com). Tell your son to only run the web browser icon on your desktop which is 'sandboxed'.

Afterwards, you can right-click on the sandboxie icon and select 'delete contents'. Everything will be removed, whether it's 1 or 100 viruses.

e.g.
Windows Updates.
Downloads.
And...
My Son plays an - Online Game.
It doesn't exactly download anything.
But it does have a - Temporary Cash Folder.
What happens to stuff you don't want to chuck out at the end of browsing?

Sandboxie is a software program that creates a "virtual" environment in which you can run your browser (or most other executables). In other words, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc. are opened in a sandbox. You can safely surf the web and if you should happen upon some malware and get infected, the infection is contained within the sandbox. When you are done surfing and you close the sandbox, all of its contents...including the malware...are deleted. Your "real" system is untouched.

The benefit Sandboxie has over traditional anti-virus and anti-spyware programs is that the latter typically lag behind in protecting your system from brand new malware. That's because the new malware hasn't been identified yet by the anti-virus and anti-spyware companies and therefore their virus signature databases are ineffective against that malware as well. But when using a sandboxed environment, you are protected from malware, be it new or old.

My computer got infected with a trojan about a year ago, most likely when my spouse went to a gaming website. Even though I had a popular anti-virus software installed on my system, the trojan blew right past it (in fact, it disabled it) and began wrecking havoc. At that time, I did not know about Sandboxie. After cleaning my system, I tried a popular HIPS program and thorougly disliked it. So I dumped that and shortly thereafter discovered Sandboxie. It's very lightweight, unobtrusive, and meets my needs.

I'm not a gamer, so can't answer your question about the Temporary Casher Folder with the game that your son plays. But I know Sandboxie has a "Recover" feature, meaning if you wish to move a sandboxed item onto your real system, you can do so.

Deciding what's Ok and Not Ok - To Allow..
It's all rather confusing :-[
I Mean...
Until I Allow Something - It's kind of hard to tell.. If the website actually needs it :-\
And if I allow - One Full Page...
Everything that was on that page .. Is allowed on any other web page too :o

At The Moment... My son is still using IE7
I can't expect him to cope with something... I'm still trying to figure out :-[

I'm sure I probably will end up with - Sandboxie .. In The End! ;)
