View Full Version : Sandboxing...

I've been looking for a good sandbox program, I've been running SandBoxIE for a few weeks, so far its working pretty good... I'm just wondering if there are any better alternatives? I used returnil for a while but restarting just isn't efficient for me, and I prefer just to sandbox internet apps and just use a drive image to restore if something goes wrong installed or otherwise...

So what are some other good sandbox apps?

Sandboxie's more configurable than Bufferzone, and has a free version...

Have you tried DefenseWall?

Haven't tried defensewall yet, but I might soon, still using sandboxie on my actual system, testing out others on VM's currently.

DefenseWall (http://www.softsphere.com/) is great. Make sure you give the online help (http://www.softsphere.com/online-help/defensewall/) a quick flick through to understand how the program functions.

IMHO, SandboxIE and Defensewall are the best choices. They work under different philosophies, and both are extremely affective, so between those 2, choose whatever you are moire comfortable with.

You can use them both at the same time.

Yes, agree, so affective that you'd be better to have some trojans at hand to feed them for when they feel for a cosy nook;D

Endorse that SBIE and DW are the best in their categories (Virtualisation Sandbox = SBIE, Policy restriction Sandbox = DW)

There is no free Bufferzone? Why should anyone buy it without testing? >:(

GeSWall

I'm using GeSWall ATM and I feel a lot safer than with Sandboxie because GW doesn't just virtualize (via REDIRECT), it prevents (via DENY and READONLY). When a program is isolated with GW, it is not allowed to communicate with trusted (non-isolated) programs. So, while malware might break out of Sandboxie, there's no way it's going to bypass GeSWall.

Agree here. However, I do like SBIE also but I feel safer with GeSWall.

Actually I was listening to a Monkeys record when I was trying out SBIE. :argh:
All kidding aside, SBIE is a great app and it's running on my wifes pc. I flip flop between GeSWall and SBIE. I feel safer with GeSWall but I'm not sure if I am safer, when I surf the net. I realize they are 2 separate apps doing different things. I really believe all people that surf the net should have either Defensewall or SBIE or GeSWall. These 3 apps compliment AV, FW and Hips type programs very well.

What about a sandboxing program for Vista 64 bit? I read somewhere about how Vista operates in such a way that it is difficult to sandbox. Is this true?

I'm not sure about the other sandbox type programs but Sandboxie is not 64bit compatible. For more info see here (http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?WindowsVista64).

Boy, makes me glad, among other reasons, that I made my recently purchased pc another 32-bit XP.
