Why does F Secure need a spyware ?

When I try F secure antivirus 2004, it also installs a software called backweb.
Why ? I really don't like that ...

I go uninstall it and try AVK 2004 instead.

True, I read that on their website ... first time I see that an antivirus vendor needs a third party to take care of the auto update.
And as the name is scary "Backweb", I will look elsewhere for antivirus security.

Then "HijackThis" should be a strict ban in your computer as its more scary in terms of name.
F-secure is not a bad AV but yes :) you can always look for what you think will serve you best

Its stricktly used for the download of defs.

Hehe, but here, someone I didn't know used the gun every week ... if it was someone I trusted there would be no problem, even a machine gun would be cool :)

I found Nod32 to be great (light on ressource and fast), but it kept asking me if Outlook was my default mail client. And yes, I tried eveything from uninstalling Outllook to unchecking the IMAPI box in the settings.

I am currently trying Norman and TDS3 for trojans.

In wrong hands Backweb could be dangerous, but in the way F-Secure uses it, it's absolutely no spyware.

Like you already said, it's strickly used for the update of the virus-database.

f-secure still uses (in all versions) backweb technology.

if you get a spybot detection on f-secure backweb it is a FALSE POSITIVE... note that ad-aware does not detect it as spyware anymore(because it's not)

Solution / Workaround

Some of the spyware detection softwares (like Ad-aware and SpyBot) detects a component (IADhide.dll or IADhide3.dll) of F-Secure BackWeb as a suspicious file. F-Secure BackWeb uses technology licensed from BackWeb Technologies. The component named IADhide.dll or IADhide3.dll is used to suppress certain operations of BackWeb client (such as playing flash messages or connecting the server) when such operations are not desirable. BackWeb Client copies the file to one of several possible directories (temp or tmp directories, 'c:\temp' or the client's version directory).
According to BackWeb Technologies the component contains no reporting capabilities of any kind and should not be considered spyware. Spyware detection companies have been contacted to remove this component from suspected files.

F-Secure Corporation considers this as a false alarm by spy ware detection software.

BackWeb Technologies statement , instructs customers to contact F-Secure to deactivate this dll, which is not possible without uninstalling F-Secure BackWeb. Since F-Secure BackWeb is an important component, we don't recommend customers to uninstalling F-Secure BackWeb.

Those guys and girls who still thinks f-secure BW-Lite contains spyware, I can't help them anymore.

My advcice to them: uninstall this top-notch, spyware-free Antivirus and replace it with a middle- or low-classified anti-virus product. ::)

With F-secure for Workstation you may install an alone program, called BackWeb. You can open it as single program and it doesn't look like a program which need to update F-secure, but a program, who has some other functions, too.

But F-secure Client Security has his own update engine. There is no single work which mention BackWeb. It is just an automatic update, that is all.

At least you got as far as installing F-secure. Everytime I have tried to install it for a trial I have been unable to re-boot my computer afterwards. Was very careful to uninstall all traces of previous antivirus as well. Thank goodness for Norton Ghost!!

Hi,

I decided to try F Secure again ... downloaded the trial version, installed it, and now, I don't have any Internet connection at all. Even though I did remove all traces of former AV.

I must say that with all the firewalls and AV I tried, there must be some leftover parts in the registry that even jv16 cannot get rid of. I will go for a clean format, and I will tell you what I really think of F Secure after that.

I wanted to install a "KAV" AV:
- AVP is said to be a memory hog (I only have 256 RAM),
- AVK is nice and I may end up with it,
- F Secure ...
- but I just read that Aladdin antivirus has a KAV motor as well. On virus bulletin, Aladdin results are frightening, something like 9 fails and no pass ... I know, I should not put to much faith in a test, but still ... any input about eSafe4 ?

Aladdin does not offer desktop antivirus solution anymore. Instead they focus on providing content security solutions for corporate customers.

eSafe4 is a gateway-based antivirus and security solution.

- looks good,
- effective,
- but as I expected, it eats too much ressource for my computer, as much as Norton 2004.

I will settle on AVK 2004.
