Hi all,
Same old, same old. Another Linux, another review :)
Cambridge is slated to be released toward the end of November. I have tested, the usual stuff: live cd, installation, post-install impressions. If you're interested:

Hey,
my findings are pretty much the same as when i tryed it.
if only adverage user stuff was easier to install.
otherwise a nice distro.
if someone wants a redhat based distro which is designed for the adverage user they should concider mandriva.
if you have time can you do a mandriva 2009 review?

Hello,
I did one in 2007 - it was very much positive ... I'll get to 2009 eventually ...
Been writing like crazy, me head's gonna implode!

This means that any closed-source or proprietary software or software with "problematic" licenses will be used in Fedora distros.
I think you accidentally left out "not"
great write up, thanks

Good review. Have you done a review on CentOS before? I know both Cent and Fedora are based on red hat so is there much difference between the two?

I have nothing but bad experience from the new mandriva 2009 release.
However fedora is among my favorite "non rolling distros" and it seems to improve each new release.
If you are a new user, you should await the release of fedora 10 because there is a new super repo that is going to be published in the same time called RPMfusion which contain most things you might want proprietary wise.

Hello,
norky, thanks!
andb, it's the livna repo, I mentioned it.
CentOS, I LOVE it. I use it all the time. My book stuff is all based on the server and several CentOS clients...

-{ Quote: "Same old, same old. Another Linux." }- Woah, there is a way to add some spice and excitement.
Please allow me to suggest that you take some time to play with OpenSolaris 2008.11 (http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/) ( development build ) and Sun Solaris 10 (http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp#download) ( 10/08 ).
It would be interesting to hear your opinion about Solaris ZFS (http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/zfs.jsp) and OpenSolaris Image Packaging System (http://opensolaris.org/os/project/pkg/).

CentOS is ideally more suited for server operations. That is primarily the reason why the developers of CentOS do not incorporate new technologies as quickly as, say, the Fedora team. But it can definitely be used as a desktop OS. Not much difference between the two since they are both Red Hat derivatives.

Hello,
I've updated the article: more testing, wireless support on a laptop, improved multimedia section, a few more tweaks. I hope you'll like it.

MrK ...busy busy busy...thanks. :)
I really want Fedora to work; I like CentOS for my desktop: rock solid for me, does what I want and well.
Fedora has given me grief b4 re setting up access to my paid for media files: I've read iteration 1 of the review and I'll go back and try again, but really...somewhat of a pita, when so many other distros give the goods oob.
:-\
BUT: there is this: Omega 10 Live CD :)
http://www.osnews.com/story/20341/Omega_10_Desktop_Linux
Very interesting and possibly a solution for those looking for fedora 'core' and media access ??
What say u ?

That sounds intriguing.

Thank you very much, Mrk.
Of course I could do such review myself, but it certainly would result in a totally different result.
And considering your experience with these different distro's, I'm interested in your comparison and a review with similar approach.
And yes, it will take you more time, in order to tweak the Solaris installation to your hardware you might need to search for the required information in the Solaris documentation, Google will be your friend.
By the way, (Open)Solaris is not released under the restrictive GPL, and that offers much relief for the closed source drivers.

Hello,
wilbertnl, different result in what way?
Unless of course, you mean from the strictly veteran-user-point-of-view? Personally, I'm trying to avoid the "heavy" stuff, because the idea is to try to educate in terms as simple and friendly as possible.

P.S. Starting working tomorrow as linux system expert / system programmer ... so it's gonna be interesting :)
