IE7 and Firefox 3 No Longer Working After Install

I just installed a 30-day trial of NOD32 SS from the official website, and now my IE7 and Firefox will not work at all.


I have no other firewalls on the computer.
Windows Live messenger DOES work.
Some sidebar apps don't work (ex: weather).
Running Vista Home Premium


I recently changed my DNS servers to OpenDNS, which I would think is important info.

I have tried switching to Interactive mode, restarting my computer, and allowing all connections. That did not work. I disabled the NOD32 firewall completely, and it STILL did not work. I am very puzzled.

I am posting this on another computer, which uses Kaspersky (which is THE MOST ANNOYING PIECE OF COMPUTER SOFTWARE ON THE ENTIRE DAMN PLANET).

UPDATE: Now I can't update the virus definitions. This is really messed up.

Try the following :

1. Uninstall ESET Smart Security
2. Reboot the computer
3. Manually delete the following folders:

for Vista:
- C:\Program data\Eset
- C:\Users\~username~\AppData\Local\Eset
- C:\Users\~username~\AppData\Roaming\Eset

4. Enable temporary Windows Firewall (Control Panel -> Windows Firewall)

5. Remove OpenDNS DNS servers , restore your ISP ones.

6. Make sure your previous antivirus/antispyware/firewall has been completely removed . This mean there are no files/folders/registry entries leftovers . You may consult with your previous vendors' web-sites and download uninstall utilities for your previous antivirus , firewall , etc...

7. Download ESET Smart Security trial version again (the latest version available) from
http://download.eset.com/eval/win/ess/ess_nt32_enu.msi

Note , this is the English version for 32-bit Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Install and update ESS , use the default settings in Automatic mode . Try again and let us know before changing anything else.

OpenDNS is a bunch of hypocrites who moan about bad practices (http://blog.opendns.com/2007/05/22/google-turns-the-page/) and yet do something a whole lot worse (http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=226). ::) :thumbd:

Can't recommend this service to anyone.

I did everything you said in there and nothing has worked.

Yes I do. But no virus protection other than Windows Firewall.

Do you install/use the firewall in ESS with its default Automatic mode ?

Yes. I used all of the recommended settings. But I did not turn off the Windows Firewall prior to installing. I turned it off after installation. I wasn't sure if it made a difference.

I think your case will need further inspection .

Download and run ESET SysInspector
http://www.eset.com/download/sysinspector.php

When the utility has collected the information , click File > Save Log
Confirm your wish. A log file , placed in a zip archive , will be created.

Send that archived file to ESET Technical Support , support@eset.com . Describe your problem in short and do include a link to this thread .

alright thanks alot do u know of any other antivirus that maybe i can download for free if so any recommendations. i have tried AVG but that also couldnt update itself so it didnt work. thanks alot

I still advise you on contacting ESET . If somehow ESS doesn't work for you , you could try only ESET NOD32 Antivirus
