Public Wi Fi Problem

Hi.
My wife and I always go to a cafe to go on public wi fi. We have the same laptops (Toshiba), same av, same firewall.
It's always worked fine, but today I got errors that someone else had the same IP address on the network, so I couldn't connect. I had Windows Diagnostics change my IP address, but it didn't work. I had my wife disconnect, and sure enough, I was able to connect.
Right now, I'm at the other end of the cafe, able to connect.
Any ideas why this has all of a sudden happened, when it never did before?

running ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew from the cmd line did not work?

I didn't do that, but I will try it next time we're at the cafe. (I'm at the library now).
Thanks. I still wonder what caused it though. Googling gave me nothing. One place claimed trojans, but I know that's not the case.
