I am planning to possibly upgrade internal HD of my laptop, Toshiba satellite M70. It,s 40 GB 5600 RMP SATA HD. I have few Qs:
1- Can I put 180 or 250 GB HD with 7200 RMP. Will increased speed will give me any performance gain?
2- Is it possible to put the old 40 GB HD in an external case and to use it as an external storage. Can e-SATA be an option here.
3- Lastly, I might just buy an external HD of 180 or 250 GB. Does Seagate has an external HD ( in small size, 2.5 inch that doesn,t need separate power supply) with e-SATA and USB support?
Thanks

1 - yes it will increase the performance.
2 - It is possible. why e-sata? If you only need it as an external storage, usb should be fine.
3 - Personally I prefer Lacie (uses samsung and toshiba hard disks) and toshiba 2.5'' external disks. Both provide an extra usb cable (for extra power supply).

Yes, performance will increase but it will use more battery power and generate more heat. It may even be noisier.
Putting it in an external case is easy enough, e-sata is only an option if your laptop has an e-sata interface. If not you'd have to look at regular usb or firewire perhaps.
Personally i haven't seen a self powered e-sata portable hard drive but i'm sure someone makes them.
