I have Acronis TI Home version 11 (build 8053) and store my backups on a Seagate Free Agent external HDD. On my last full image update attempt I encountered a problem when I tried to delete the previous image .tib file.
I kept getting and error message that the file could not be deleted because another person or program might be using the file. I got the same error message when attempting to delete from the external HDD or from within the archival tree. No other programs were running and I always disable all my start up applications and antivirus program before running TI and initiating a backup.

I don't make any significant changes to my C: drive so my backups are full images every 3 months. The deleting problem has not occured before and I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on why this is happening.

Another question is whether I need to delete the previous full image before creating a new image or is an overwrite just as effective?

Any input or guidance would be appreciated.

Boot in safe mode and delete the file.

Thanks for the response, Wandering 2. It worked in safe mode.

Hopefully someone will respond to the question delete vs overwrite.

Often times, problems with files or missing files are not discovered until weeks or months later. The more backups you can keep, the safer you are should one or more of your backups become corrupt. Having only one backup is living dangerously. Your storage disk can fail and if that is your only storage device, then your backups are lost.

Hello fdm2000,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/).

We are sorry for delayed response.

Both overwtiting and deleting will yield the same results in this case. However, as GroverH noted, it's recommended to keep more than one backup if possible.

Thank you.
