PC Tools' antivirus is very decent, but I'd say it's unstable for long-term use due to being bought out by Symantec.

PCTools AV is well-known to have begun life as a clone of VirusBuster, a perennial upper-second-tier AV program. It's okay, I guess.

By the way, PCTool's AV is built into Threatfire (TF) (http://www.threatfire.com/), a free behavior-blocker-type-HIPS. TF uses PCT's AV for on-demand look-up. So, if you run TF, you will have PCT's AV on-the-job as well -- a fine combo... and free!

Would Avira free be a better choice in terms of coexisting AV? I would like to know because AVG 8 paid had some freezing problems and they did not go well in the same computer,

It is just as bug-free & stable as other antivirus programs (NONE of which are 100% perfect, of course). The PCT AV lags a bit behind the top-tier AVs in terms of detection as well as (possibly) its heuristics/emulator proficiency.

I've heard many good things about this Antivirus. Just wondering how resource friendly this is?

PCtools AV is easily the lightest AV I’ve tried, and like AVG8 it does not require a reboot upon install.

I had no problems with it at all except for a conflict with SandboxIE, probably due to the introduction of the memory guard.

I don’t know if it has very good, if any, termination resistance as some of the other free AV’s do. I did run it for a while with Online Armor Free for a while for added termination resistance with good results.

The only downside is always wondering if it protects you as well as another free AV would.

If PCTAV were "good" then this forum would have an enormous amount of positive threads devoted to it. Unfortunately that is not the case. PCT Spyware Doctor suffers a similar fate.

There is not much talking about AVAST either but this does not mean that it is not a good product so the forum discussion is not a sufficient indicator that a certain product is or is not a good one .

I beg to differ; there are plenty of threads discussing avast in one form or another. I suppose I was a little vague in my previous post, but there's no question that if you search for avast you'll find it mentioned in over 1000 threads vs. a handful with the search term pctools. Sift thru the reputable comparatives and other reviews for more info.

Has PCT scrapped the VirusBuster engine completely?

Are you saying it would be pointless to use PCT_AV in conjunction with TF, that you could get the same protection with TF alone?
