One needs to assess the security software which they use and use a solution tailored to themselves. In my opinion (biases aside ;)) a Automated Community Based Intrusion Prevention System is the most thorough and accurate solution as it takes in data from every user using the software and therefore, every new client benefits every other one.

100% whitelisting solutions have their place, as do anti-executable apps, as do virtualization apps, but it all depends on the environment and user.
