Light firewall?

Whats the lightest firewall I can get with basic outbound protection?

That would depend on your requirements. A very lightweight firewall that would not watch for applications would be SoftPerfect, AS3 or windows firewall (among others). For one that does monitor applications, Kerio is a perennial favorite around here, but you could also try OnlineArmor or even DSA. Even older versions of Sygate are still well respected for this matter.

Comodo D+ uses an average of 11k.
Very lite and smooth.
Don't even know it's there except for the occassional pop up on a program it doesn't recognise. 8)

Been using Kerio 2.1.5 for many years now. Barely using 4,5k You won't notice it's there.

If you are behind a router, then all you need for outbound is a HIPS with network protection. System Safety Monitor will do the job -- light & effective.

Lightest firewall with basic outbound protection? Install Comodo Firewall Pro (free) without Defense+ and without the enhanced leaktest protection. This will not install Defense+ at all, where if you choose enhanced leaktest protection, it would still install some options of Defense+.

you know after testing commodo Firewall Pro for a week I am very disappointed for an easy to configure-easy to use firewall.

I am now testing Online Amour Free and it seems (so far- I only have it on for one day) much more user friendly- and easier to use.

I tried to do exactly that on one computer, but I'm pretty sure Defense + was fully active, and even when I tried to disabled D+ from its own GUI the command would be ignored on reboot. How does one know D+ is disabled?
The console seems to be functional, and nothing tells you there's been a change.

I had Online Armour Free for a week, and yes it is more user friendly, but I was surprised how much it tends to alert you, it also keeps telling you what it is doing which I found quite irritating. My wife couldn't stand it, back to Comodo on that computer.

In options you can uncheck the box that tells you it is alerting you whenever it does something other than asking to allow or dissalow a program

If you want strong network protection, Comodo Firewall without D+ will do the job, Along with a good AV you should be sweet.

I don't have any problems teaching/explaining/telling you how to handle Alerts with D+ though...And getting a good experience. :)

If you are using Vista give Vista Firewall Control (http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html) a try. It will give you decent outbound control for free.

Actually, you could install look n stop and disable the network filter, just leave the application filter enabled and use Windows Firewall for the rest. Nice, simple, light. Not 100% leaktest detection, but sounds like what you are looking for.

Jetico 1 if you have XP or earlier. Free and very good outbound protection although it'll take a bit to configure. I remember it sure being lightweight.

Agreed, but (although not "heavy") it is hardly the lightest.
