it is not design to do all in one security suit,but it is a good complament to your antivirus or antispyware:thumb: it helps protect your system from unknown attacks.

While I am curious about the program, I am baffled about the lack of info on the site? Basically they tell you it's a great program and even better if you go for the prof. version. No explanation of what it does (apart from the one paragraph), no screenshots or FAQ ???

I get better protection from the so-called relic CyberHawk then TF could ever offer. If you was to go that route why wouldn't PrevX be first in line as a viable choice, or for that matter Mamutu.

You can download the free version and take a look. It's a small file, installs within 10 seconds, easy to remove if it's not what you're after.

The difference between the free and the plus version, the free version scans for new 'startup entries', hidden files, changes to default file extensions and so on, every three minutes (or something like that). Note, there is a delay.

So if a program installs itself, winpatrol free will alert you a few minutes later, and you can then open up winpatrol to remove the startup entry, the changed file extension, the hidden file etc.

The plus version allows scans to be in realtime, alerting you immediately if a 'hidden file' suddenly loads up or a new program is adding a start-up entry. The plus version also allows you to browse through all the files/extensions running and if you're unsure what a file is, you can access the winpatrol database which describes the file and its function.

So effectively, if someone were to install a program/keylogger on your system without you knowing, winpatrol would allow you to browse and find the suspect file, and remove it from your system. :thumb:

If that doesn't interest you, you might find you could just install the free version to use as a 'task manager' (easier than alt+ctrl+del) to kill any programs or lock ups.

Or for users with slower systems and long boot up times, they might find it beneficial to use winpatrol to delay programs from the initial startup. For example, if 'program A' is trying to load along with your AV, firewall and so on, you could set 'program A' to load up five minutes after you log on.

I cannot comment on Threatfire, but IMHO the more familiar "traditional" HIPs proggies (SSM, ProSecurity / RTM) will provide uber protection.
I find WP adequate here. The additional "goodies" packaged with this soft (i.e.: Plus Info) are very cool.

Winpatrol's great strength is the way it brings together many types of information in one tabbed interface, such as startup items and IE BHO's. It also has a delayed startup manager to speed access to the desktop (by delaying the loading of non-essential background apps). I use it all the time to cleanup and optimize computers. It does provide protection by alerting to home page, search provider, host file and other system file changes, but I don't rely on it for that.

You are correct. It is a great program and I have used it for years.

Also, the application is as light as a feather. You won't even know it's running.

I find winpatrol, along with A-squared's HiJackFree (http://www.hijackfree.com/en/hijackfree/) are a good combination. One providing alerts in real time, while the other (HiJackFree) being more advanced allowing for a manual, and detailed search of process information.
