View Full Version : K-Lite Codec Packs Reverted Back to 4.1.6

The only difference is that this newer version 4.1.6 does not have the
spyware "Check for codecs news and updates" option the older version
4.1.7 has. Since we are an official mirrors I will just post links to us for this:

In the past I have frequently seen wrong(older) version numbers in majorgeeks new softwares pages;they do
get corrected eventually.
But its odd to see version no. revert to an older 4.1.6, instead of a newer 4.1.8.
Are these sites reliable for K-Lite CodecPack: codecguide.com, free-codecs.com, codecs.com ?
Why these dont mention anything about 4.1.6 ?

Well i cannot comment on what non-official sites do.
www.codecguide.com is the page that is hosted by the person(s) who make the k-lite codecpack
And it mentions 4.1.7

Here is all i know. I was told he removed the one feature that related to auto updating and reverted it back to 4.1.6. Their website shows it as 4.1.6 here; http://www.codecpackguide.com/
Im not sure what else I can say, thats all the information I have. Got a few rude emails over it as well assuming I made a mistake.
Its not as rare to see a version revert back, frankly I see it once to twice a week. Its rare something popular like K-Lite does it which draws attention to it. Often I try and ignore reverting back, however I do not ignore the authors requests.

Thanks for confirming codeckpackguide.com is official site.
So now latest is 4.1.6 and not 4.1.7.

Btw, iirc the "Check for codecs news and updates" option has been around for many many versions. But I've always unchecked it during install.

Sorry guys but that is not the official page.
It's a mirror or clone or whatever
The real site is www.codecguide.com. The forum on it includes is the official support forum.
that forum is where the beta's used to be released in the past and where changes are discussed.
--------------
the "Check for codecs news and updates" option just opens your browser windows once, and guess what? it opens codecguide.com....
It has indeed been in k-lite codecpack since at least version 2.0, the removal was probably requested by one of the mirrors/fake sites
----------------
See here the response to the fake 4.1.6 by the k-lite codepack author:

Hi Majorgeeks,
The site that you pointed is fraudulent. All the files leasted there emule049b, dvd decrypter, Kazaa Lite K++, etc. are not the official versions.
For example:
Emule 49b from http://codecpackguide.com/ has a size of 6,32 MB and hash SHA-1 79A163E3281316370909692956FD989CF2725C11
while the official http://www.emule-project.net/ has a size of 3,08 MB and hash SHA-1 10F68F388FD867217EFD760FA59A579398DFE54D
Panagiotis
edit:
I just checked their emule version and it seems to be just a repack of the official with all the languages and some extra links. The hashes of the files match with those of the official (at least the exes and dlls), the servers included are ok; nothing to worry about.

Ok cool that clears it all up.
Just to be extra clear
-Codecguide.com is the official site, and majorgeeks now links to this
-4.1.7 is the latest official version
-The installer does not contain any spyware as far as we know

Another question:
Real Alternative, Quicktime Alternative & its lite version (QT Lite) - is codecguide.com the official site too?

September 22nd, 2008, 10:43 AM
I found a lot of discrepancies codecguide@gmail.com gmail? webmaster@codecpackguide.com
codecguide host no files just links so why would they do that? You would think they would at least host their own files
been reading http://codecs.freeforums.org/4-1-7-4-1-6-what-is-happening-t876.html He says they copy and pasted but wait a minute they host the files.
check out the feedback on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:K-Lite_Codec_Pack
As of the first week of June, 2007, every trace of K-lite Mega Codec Pack was deleted from its site. Nevertheless, a new version was already published in unofficial sites. No official reason was given for this. -Lwc4life 18:21, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
They returned it one week later as a new version that does no longer include QuickTime Alternative. -Lwc4life 23:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Well as the k-lite codecpack is something someone puts together in his basement and gets paid nothing for (he dit get a few dcma threats in the past though) i don't see any problems with using a gmail account.
The k-lite codecpack has always been hosted on other sites since day one. Those sites are big file download sites like majorgeeks, saves the codepack author money and time.(free product and all)
That june 2007 incident had to do with a DCMA thing apple sent to codecguide.com which forced them to remove it and stop developement of quicktime alternative.
What he meant with copy paste is: Major Geeks got "faked" into reverting to 4.1.6 and all the "fake" sites copied that information thus leaving only the official site with a 4.1.7 version.

Thanks guys, running a large download site does not make us perfect. We went back to the newest version for now. Sorry for any confusion. The guy spoofed the email well fooling me, but I emailed the author who told me it was BS. Thanks for you patience, understanding and efforts here. We dont mind being wrong, actually we love it, only if being corrected by our peers, like yourselves, without you were nothing.

With deepest respects, majorgeeks, you must have a system to verify senders of emails you get eg. GNUPG, PGP etc , as its trivial to spoof any email address and misdirect you to link to the wrong files(social engineering).
To keep up majorgeeks popularity , those who update your news must check that updates really exist on valid (original) sites. I am a daily visitor to majorgeeks and rely on it.
Thanks/regards

Hello,
The bare minimum would be spamassassin checking incoming mail headers, digital signatures, possibly even your own certificate ...
You might also build your own submission form - on your site - and grant authorization keys to vendors. For example, a 256-bit passphrase for k-lite guys, a different 256-bit passphrase for spybot guys etc. Thus only those submissions where the key fits the application are processed further.

Would be good if it is bona fide.

Couple of the posts are a little odd ??

To answer some questions if I may...
We do this 7 days a week. We dont take vacations. First thing I do Christmas morning.. is work. Anyone putting in that sort of time makes mistakes. I recognized the name of the sender and confused it with someone else. Its a mistake, it really sucks and I hate when it happens. Nice thing is we have a group of users who rarely let mistakes slip by and that is awesome! In this case, no one saw this but you guys, so thanks!
I am Tim, co-owner of Majorgeeks, you can email me at tim@ to confirm if you like. I visit here frequently, thought I might try to contribute when we have some killer apps.
We had a submission form and removed it a few months back for 2 reasons:
1: it was almost all spam
2: we add programs differently then any other download website I know of. We pick the software. Usually someone emails us, or the author does and we review it and decide what to add. We also visit tons of the best websites, like this one to look for whats cool. When we had the submit page, we deleted 96% of submitted items.
Anything else, just ask or email!
