I have been using Norton for more than four years with out any problems. Right now I'm still using Norton 2002 and am thinking about upgrading. My subscription to Symantec is about to run out and before I re-new I wanted to find out if there are any good free anti-virus programs out there. Anyone have any recommendations or advice?

1- avast4! HE (with mail scanner)
2- eTrust promo 7 (no mail scanner)
3- AVG Free Edition (not a very hi detection rate)
4- Antivir (fairly good but has some false positives/no mail scanner,no heuristics)

In my opinion the best freeware antiviruses are Avast Home Edition, and eTrust v. 7 promo as resident or the free offer of CA. To use only one antivirus it is not enough:as secondary scanner I think the better choice are Bidefender free or Escan free Toolkit. If you are using Win 98 there is F-prot for Dos.
Free AT: a2 free and Ewido Security Suite.
The result is not a "total protection" but a "good protection" with many faults.
