a) Tried updating a driver (in XP PRO, SP3) and in spite of having a newer dated driver on hand, the OS tells me it could find nothing better than installed driver. How come?

b) Having some odd trouble w/few apps, wherein I can't do usual Alt-Tab, to flip through various open windows; so I am stuck with open windows behind the app, I can't get to. Any ideas on a fix for that?

c) I currently have main part. of C: with XP PRO SP3 on it and wondered if I can install WIN98 to the 2nd part. or to a 2nd drive, for some older cranky apps that seem to "come and go" under XP PRO. They seem to work fine for some time, then turn against me.

* One or more of these woes may be just with this PC; had my share of ups and downs over time, and seem to be having some serious unknown hard/soft ware ills, that come and go (like rebooting, being told I have no drives, or a hard reboot that caused a time-travel episode wherein I lost Restore Points, and suddenly had back old ver. of iTunes that I had removed earlier in the day.) And so it goes, I guess, in the World of WIN-TEL platforms...

Pick a card/any card, take a stab at answering one. <g>

Thanks for help/ideas, on this.

Globalforce;

Chickened out, re the reset of reg. settings/permissions. I diidn't want to go too far, lay the PC wide open for any further outside woes via internet or what have you. Lord knows, I do seem to be doing a fine job of messing up things by myself.

ONLY trouble installing is seemingly with .msi file now and then (but not always), and of course, iTunes. BUT, when I had that trouble, found diff. way to install newer ver. the last two times, that worked fine.

For (c) might i suggest you install 98 inside a virtual machine. This way you can run your 98 apps in XP. Virtualbox is free and allows you to do this quite easily, it also has a 'seamless' mode so it will appear as if your 98 apps are running natively on XP.
