Eraser doesn't clean the MTF where the file names are stored, East-Tec does clean the MTF where the file names are kept. East-tec in Europe=CyberScrub in the US.

I think you are mistaken. Eraser does do clean the MTF. As far as I know, Eraser from Heidi.ie will overwrite the deleted file entries in the NTFS MFT. Use the wipe unused disk space option.

However, I am confused, I don't believe that is possible even with East-Tec. The MFT is effectively an array. You cannot eliminate 'intermediate' MFT records without completely invalidating the entire volume. And the only way I can see to erase the content of 'free' MFT records is to run a program that writes to the MFT directly, outside the file system. That seems like a risky proposition to me.

Anyone know for sure?

The duo looked at how six products handled the $MFT: Microsoft’s own Cipher.exe, CyberScrub (from CyberScrub LLC), PGP Shred and PGP Wipe (from PGP Corp.), WinCleaner Destroy-it (from Business Logic Corp.) and Evidence Eliminator (from Robin Hood Software Ltd. ). They had found that only one, Evidence Eliminator, completely erased information from the $MFT, according to a report of their findings in the August 2006 issue of Communications of the ACM.

Berghel speculated that part of the reason third-party utility companies are reluctant to tackle this problem is that Microsoft itself has not published specifications on how $MFT works, so writing software that works with $MFT could be too dangerous. “The exercise of overwriting metadata files comes with considerable risk,” Berghel e-mailed to GCN. “Trashing customers’ mission-critical files is a real non-starter for a software utility developer.”

So it seems only Evidence Eliminator does it. Too bad its not free as I won't buy it.

However, that article could have been written by a person who works for Evidence Eliminator.

I will keep using Eraser.

Because it seems it's too risky to mess with the MFT, that's why Eraser doesn't do it. Notice the article said, "The exercise of overwriting metadata files comes with considerable risk,”

And besides I am not convinced with this MFT issue.
