Newbie question : Tor with Java/IRC Chat ?

Hopefully this will be a really easy one to "solve" (I'm relatively "techie" but don't know much about anonymizing etc. !)

My situation is that I used to chat on a site that uses a Java chat client but is based on IRC (i.e. I could connect via mIRC or via the Java on their website) and I attracted a few nutters on there who know how to use IRC and a few scripts, and could basically identify me no matter what name I signed in on via my (non-rotating) IP address.

All I want to do is connect to this site via the Java (not mIRC) with a masked IP address so I can't be linked to my previous identity on there.

I downloaded the Tor bundle with Firefox in, and I can see via other sites that is working as it should and masking my IP address. The problem seems to be that the Java doesn't load within this bundled version of Firefox and I don't know how to get it to load or to install it ? My Google searches for "Tor" and "Java" brought me to this site, and having read a few threads, it looks like connecting to Java anonymously can maybe somewhat tricky ?

Can anyone give me reasonably basic instructions on how I can
a) get the Java chat applet to load/install in my "Torrified" Firefox
b) Connect to the Java chat using my masked IP
(preferably just with Tor and without needing to buy/subscribe to any tunnel software)

I use a VPN and would never use Tor as anything other than a toy. But I did receieve an email notification of a new Tor bundle download. It includes Pidgin for chat. But I have never had any problems using the Tor bundle with Java unless I had noscript set to block scripts on that particular site.

Evidently, according to Steve with Xerobank, JanusVM uses Tor and you can use all the Java and javascript you like without revealing your true IP. And if I understand correctly, Xerobank Machine will also run on tor and it is a Virtual Machine so it is the safest most secure way of using Tor. And it is free. No need to worry about Java or Javascript or anything else. I haven't tried the new one yet, but I think it comes with Pidgin built in.

Hmmm - I wonder why mine isn't working then ? The version of Firefox I use is the one that was bundled in the package (which says the "using Tor" in the bottom right) but when I navigate to the chat page it acts as if Java isn't installed at all - the plug-in/applet doesn't even attempt to load.

I'll have a look at the other VM products that you mentioned and see if that makes any sense to me. (I didn't bother with the Pidgin bundle as I specifically want to use the Java version of the site anonymously rather than IRC)
