View Full Version : V 8.937 and Path Lengths

Occasionally, I consider upgrading my Version 8.937 of ATI, but I use it for the basic imaging/restoring operations - just the core stuff. I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I do have one concern, though.
I know that files with long path names disrupt the backup process by returning an error message and waiting for user action. I wonder if, in Version 8.937, that error message does not appear and ATI simply ignores the offending file.
Anyone know?
Thanks,
EdP

EdP" }-TI 8 is reading sectors on the disk and not filenames or paths, so the length doesn't mattter. All TI 8 know is the data in the sectors. It doesn't know which sector belongs to which file, nor does it care. It just wants to know if the sector is "in use." That is, does it contain data that needs to be included in the backup image.
If you use file backup programs, some may choke on long path names while others are programmed to handle any name that the operating system can generate. You have to try them to see if they work.
Image backup programs don't care, so they just work. (Note that later versions of True Image added file and folder backup as an new feature. In that case, path length might be a problem. I don't have experience with TI's file and folder backup feature to know how well it does in this regard.

Thanks for the response, John ...
I knew that was how an image backup worked, but I couldn't reconcile that with what I've read about long path names being a problem with ATI. Being so narrow-minded, I never thought about using ATI to back up just a file or folder.
But that leads to another question ....
Sometimes I might need to use the backed up image to restore just a file or folder (Explore Image) - any long path problem with that?

EdP" }-I have never found any. Since you are running TI in Windows at that point, if the path was legal in Windows, you should have no problem with the restore in Windows.
