* * * * Speak Freely is a Windows application that allows you to talk (actually send voice, not typed characters) over a network. If your network connection isn't fast enough to support real-time voice data, four forms of compression may allow you, assuming your computer is fast enough, to converse nonetheless. To enable secure communications, encryption with DES, IDEA, and/or a key file is available. If PGP is installed on the user's machine, it can be invoked automatically to exchange IDEA session keys for a given conversation. Speak Freely for Windows is compatible with Speak Freely for Unix, and users of the two programs can intercommunicate. Users can find one another by communicating with a "Look Who's Listening" phonebook server. You can designate a bitmap file to be sent to users who connect so they can see who they're talking to. Speak Freely supports Internet RTP protocol, allowing it to communicate with other Internet voice programs which use that protocol; in addition, Speak Freely can also communicate with programs which support the VAT (Visual Audio Tool) protocol.

Hey have you ever used Roger Wilco? I know the new version has lots of "Gamespy" crap in it but I've got the old version that doesn't. My gaming squad keeps the old one in service and available at our site. I know it's not a "network" thing but it's pretty darn good (for free) and doesn't hog resources.

Being a multiplayer video game enthusiast, I have used some voice over net progs. They include:

Roger Wilco *- ok but bandwith hog
Batlecom - loausy interface
Gavevoice - uses DX8, best one for sure but it is MS and used MS Messenger

One other one *- I can't remember the name but it sucked anyhow.

RAF is a Delta Force 2 thing... But several of us play other games together too... It's really a lot of fun to have a group like that!

mostly Unreal tournament, but some Infiltration, medal of honour, castle wolfenstein, red faction, Jedi Knight II among others.

Understandably so! I pull mine off by having all my classes in the morning and I play with european people so they are on in their evening right in my early afternoon... so US time I'm playing noon-4 or so ;-)

You seem interested in mainly reality based FPS while i like the more imaginary. I'll trade a mp5 for a light saber any day!

You may enjoy Infiltration, it started as a mod for Unreal Tournament, and has grown into its own game. Very realistic. Pretty soon you'll be able to buy it separate, but right now you need UT, then install a freely downloadable package and away you go. It ends up being two games for one. it has extraordinary game play.

Yes, I mostly play realistic games but honestly I haven't tried any other types since I used to play DOOM hehe... Flashpoint is incredibly real, you can drive jeeps trucks and cars and tanks... a person can use each of the 3 positions ina modern tanks, man helcopters and fly planes... Players can maket oo much lag for much fun against each other, but I make my own co-operative multiplayer missions that are really fun! Also, the AI in that game is plenty smart to give you a run! Of course you can set the skill levels of all the Ai opponents you place.

Price?.... seems version 4.0 is free....if you can find it!

This one seemed to be just for voice and it sounded pretty good! (LOL...i haven't tested the sound but the stats looked awesome!)

(the d/l file is rave2ins.exe but no version or company details under the properties, so i don't know if i've d/l'ed the most current version or not.)

so after a li'l hunting i got the two files above (Razius and Rave2) but i'm not going to try them until i can find more information on them. *i like the encryption of voice and/or text but not the feeling i got from hunting down information on (and files for) these two programs.

Has anyone tried any of these per chance?

well i can't find anymore information on those programs, and not liking the lack of information on the actual files-----------dumps them into the recycle bin

they may be good programs but there's not enough information for me to try them.
