Lavasoft Ad-aware 2008 free edition

I've been using this for some time now but the last few days when I try to update the programme, it tells me 'no connection to download server' and 'check internet connection'
I know that the internet is connected so can't understand why I get this message all the time
Any ideas please ?

I think it's a good idea to drop Ad-Aware,
and use alternatives, like SuperAntiSpyware Free, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Not that Ad-Aware is bad, but SAS and MBAM does a better work.

I totally agree. Ad-Aware is just wasted space, a slow and bloaty program that that can be replaced by more powerful and light alternatives, like SAS.

Seems SAS and MBAM are the top contenders but according to the review below Ad-aware ain't ready to roll over and die as yet.

That is in that test. In real life, Ad-Aware often detects only the most common threats, often only tracking cookies, and often fails to remove everything:thumbd:

+1; whenever I get my hands on an infected machine, I try Ad-Aware out of the habit and it never helped. For past two years, it just detects useless stuff and leaves the annoying malware intact. :thumbd:

I join the consensus; Ad-Aware is no longer useful.
Don't know what happened; it seems to coincide with release of the new program in 2007.

I have the exact same complaint with Superantispyware.
Neither it nor Ad-Aware have detected ANY malware in about eighteen months. Neither has Ewido's online scanner- only an occasional cookie or two.

I'm using MBAM free and occasionally use the A-Squared online malware scanner.
I'm starting to wonder if THAT'S overkill !

Regarding the latter, A-Squared online malware scanner, probably 'underkill'. I've tried it and never found anything but harmless cookies. (Even when my security setup was considerably less secure than it is now).

Ad-aware is a very poor soft for me it is in pair with ST and i never trusted it before although i had for a year on my machine back in 2005 . Since then didn't even know if it existed and wouldn't care even if they gave the pro for free.

+1 Ad-Aware struggled against a Zlob infection at my friends place, Finally had to use F-Secure Online Scanner in Safe mode to get the job done :thumb:

Is it remotely possible the machine is clean, therefore no malware to detect?
Why the expectation there will be malware on it when you scan?

For the life of me the only resurgence i can come up with for this long demised AS is if they would finally either spin-off a separate decent HIPS program or add a HIPS (if possible) to their existing AS and while they're at it completely overhaul their detections and especially cleaning abilities against malware.

Otherwise i can only see they will only continue the downward spiral which is been their newest legacy for quite some time now.

Surely they are very aware of their current position and reputation by now or lack thereof.
