View Full Version : Which one should I add?

Hi,

I'm using Defensewall right now,
I know DW is the only software I need,
but I would like to add either Avast! or Threatfire.

Because I sometimes have to use IE as trusted,
and I have the ActiveSkin issue for DW,
so I'm thinking that I might need just one more software
that will cover that.

Which one is lighter?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Both are light.
Both offer good protection.
TF might be better due to zero-day protection.
It depends how comfortable you feel by answering prompts. Although TF is very silent, you may have to make some choices every now and then.

Personally, I would go with TF, advanced rules are very usefull. Look for threads and posts by Kees1958, he has very good know-how on TF.

It could also be suggested that you use both, but it seems that you want to keep things light.

I will search for an old thread on TF advanced rules, when I find it, I'll edit this post.

My understanding is that defensewall is a hips program with sandboxing included. That being said, I would rather supplement it with a strong a/v like avira over adding another hips program in Threatfire to avoid conflicts.

No, it's not a sandbox. It lowers the privileges of files that come through your browser so that they don't have access to sensitive area's of your pc. I supplement it with Sandboxie but there is debate regarding whether there is any real benefit from doing this.

That makes good sense, although I didn't do that because maybe I lack good sense.

It is a policy based sandbox then? Like GeSWall.

I've never used GesWall, but reading the POC they appear very similar.

Indeed GesWall and DefenseWall are very similar. Same concept, almost same funcionality.

Well, not really. GeSWall is using more virtualization. But, in general- base concepts are very close to each other.
