E.S.S or NOD32 & COMODO?

I have a new laptop which has Norton 2008... Its Crap.
I have always used nod32 And like it alot.
Now i would like to Install E.S.S But am worried about the Firewall reviews i have read, though most of them seem over a Year old.
I really want the best protection for my new unit.
I would love to hear some responses on wheather i should use
E.S.S or Nod 32 And Comodo???

i dont think you can disable firewall in ess, not permanently. i would suggest nod32 and comodo.

Hello,

ESS is for notebook better solution and not only for system requirements. When you switch firewall to interactive mode, you will be protected better than in automatic mode. You can download trial versions and try it.

i have set to interactive mode.

Do i need to run defender auto protection with E.S.S???

It isn't necessary, I think. Run apps with thinking and no problem. :)

you can specify each action in Scheduler. There is option to remove/edit existing action or add new action. So, answer is "Yes". :)

Hey Everyone,
I was glad to see this topic as I was just about to give up on this. I just purchased a laptop with Vista SP 1 64 bit.
I loaded the 64 bit NOD32 and also Comodo Firewall Pro. I was hesitant since there was a virus scanner in the Firewall Pro. Everything seemed to go ok, but when I tried to download a program, access was denied. I could not get a program to save. I then noticed that Comodo was not in the toolbar as well. I removed NOD32 and suddenly I could save files, extract files, and Comodo showed back up.
I noticed that in Comodo, when I installed, there was an option for just the firewall. Is that option needed to make NOD32 and Comodo play nice?

While I would like to run ESS Smart Security, I have not really seen any full tests on it so I worry it might not be as secure as others. (Paranoid being the first laptop I have had...:) )

Any thoughts on fixing the issues or even on thoughts on the Smart Security Firewall?

PC Magazine review of the ESS firewall part (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2215478,00.asp). You might as well use the one bundled with Windows, since the outgoing blocking is either non-existant or a huge PITA to use (no prebuilt whitelist, no learning mode). :thumbd:

I laughed when I read this, you use the review of pcmag to trustfully judge the firewall of Eset. But you also bash around Norton like it's total crap, yet Norton has pcmag's editors choice award for a very long time now!

Geez... I've tested the thing myself. The PC Mag review is absolutely true wrt their firewall - it's either inbound-only or unusable - so I pointed to that, instead of writing long descriptions myself.

(And especially for you - unlike NIS, it at least doesn't commit suicide every couple of weeks and updates in seconds and not hours, now how about keeping on topic?)

Um, it's a review of the very firewall we're discussing...how is that off-topic? I'll gladly step up and say to take PCMag's reviews with a grain of salt. They're known to use the same old techniques to test and outdated malware/viruses to attack the software they are testing....not to mention the love affair with Norton. I can't prove it, but come now, I've been reading both PCMag and PCWorld for years and only PCMag KEEPS Norton as its recommendation.

Whether or not they love Norton, I have no idea. Note that I only pointed to the firewall part of the review... which, regardless the above speculations, is entirely accurate.

(And, you don't suspect me of promoting the yellow stuff, do you? ;D)

Back to the topic here... I simply don't see the value in the firewall part of the ESS thing. If you hate HIPS, install Comodo as Firewall only, either with Leak Protection (will leave only small part of their HIPS features on) or even without it (will turn off D+ entirely, leaving you basically with packet filtering/SPI) - no need to pay money for that.

Heck, you could even use the bundled XP/2003/Vista firewall and get the same firewall functionality as in ESS firewall for free. Without prebuild whitelist and/or learning mode, the more advanced ESS firewall functionality is for masochists only and CFP in Clean PC mode beats it one handed.

It does not matter who thinks Nortons Crapware is good;

Well do you care about leak tests or the usability & stability of the product? It's what fits you- Test both products your self and see what suits you're needs. People are going to give you different answers.

Anyway jolli. NOD32 & CFP work great together - Once CFP 3 learns your programs that you use, the alerts will die down. Safe Mode & Clean PC Mode are the most recommended settings (Safe Mode personally would be the best one).

So I would give NOD32 & CFP 3 a go... You can always post @ the Comodo forums for further info & assistance if required.

I have done it & it is still now a toss up between Nod32 & Comodo OR
Nod 32 & Online Armor for me; as both are Impressive.
