IS E.S.S FIREWALL ANY GOOD?

I have a new laptop which has Norton 2008... Its Crap.
I have always used nod32 And like it alot.
Now i would like to Install E.S.S But am worried about the Firewall reviews i have read, though most of them seem over a Year old.
I really want the best protection for my new unit.
I would love to hear some responses on wheather i should use
E.S.S or Nod 32 And Comodo???

ESET Smart Security is an integrated suite and and such must be tested with all modules enabled. The problem is the testers disabled all modules and left only firewall enabled for testing, thus the results are as they are.

You can download and install a trial version of ESS and you'll see if it works for you as you expect to. If you have already installed a trial version of EAV, you'll need to uninstall it first, otherwise you wouldn't be able to update the trial version of ESS.

Hi i have just installed a trial of E.S.S.
I updated it fine. Virus Sig. 3308.
I have switched Firewall to Interactive Mode.
Ram has dropped from 51% to 38% on startup. :)
(will add another 1gb, From 2gb to 3gb in next couple of days.)

But it says it is only valid until 20/08/08
that is only 21 Days??
Nod website states a '30 Day Trial'

The firewall is good. It's just that it takes a bit of getting used to configuring if you've been used to the Norton way of doing it.

How do i turn the firewall to stealth mode?

And How long should i keep it on interactive mode?

Im not used to the norton way its Crap.
Ive previously used Online Armor Paid in my xp machine.

The latest matousec results disturb me & truthfully i dont feel secure as i'd like.
Thinking About Going back to Nod32 plus OA or Comodo.

Yes. After reading i changed some settings in Firewall and now it leaks just a 'number below 5' of that tools. (Was a Site with MANY leaktest tools...)

Just tested my ESS and it recognized LT as a test entity (Big red Notice) and quaranteed it. ESS is the most "set it and forget it " security tool I have used, and it is the least intrusive. The only changes I made is to set it to stealth during installation, and to set it to "Interactive".

Well, I meant the zones and rules. But I held the rules generally. I did not simply block the currently downloaded programs outgoing Traffic. For example, i have closed the Teredo Client Port... changed some Settings in my Browser...

Maybe u can make a table for wich Leaktest-programms the ESET Firewall do block and wich not ... and what settings we have to change to block everything.
(btw: its not possible to block ECHO requests with ESET Firewall [... or Fritz.box Router or, <Snip> not even with IPCOP])

The quality of recent ESET software is not good. Read these forums. One issue that is particularly annoying (to me) is that the ESS firewall prevents DHCP from assigning an IP address. Yes, I've tried everything mentioned so far in these forums. It simply doesn't work. I have to disable firewall to get an IP address. The rule editor looks very advanced and technical but it in reality it is very opaque. There is no precise expression of how general or specific the rules are.
Still, ESS is better than any software Norton/Symantec have produced in the last 10 years.

Thanks. I think im going to go back to a Combination of either Nod 32 + Online Armor or Nod 32 + Comodo until the firewall improves.

I think that some folks look for problems where none really exist.

Comodo drove me nuts - too busy. I ran it with ESET prior to ESS.

With ESS, I have had NO problems - nada.

I now have my life back where I can do other things than "manage" this CPU.

If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. Relax.

PS I do have 2 other mirror drives "just in case". I use Casper for backup.

I don't think ESET Firewall is the best option.:(

Be careful. The quality of ESET software, while still good, is not what it used to be, IMO. A lot of comments are based on history and do not reflect recent trends. I have had quite a few issues lately, running approx. twenty seats of the SS product.

As for other options, the upcoming Norton 2009 isn't bad. It's the opposite of ESET: past was awful, but recent trend looks good. Kapersky's always had good products. Avira plus Online Armor (both free) are great home options too.

I tend to agree here - personally I think the ESS firewall is weak
