View Full Version : Event Log and telling how successful a backup has been

I have what I think is a very basic backup question, but cannot easily find the answer in TrueImage 10.

How can I easily reassure myself that a backup has been successful?

I would have expected to find all the basic backup details in the Event Log, but other than an "Operation succeeded" message there is not much more. No details of how many files or MBs have been backed up. You even seem to get an "Operation completed successfully" message if there were problems and it could not backup certain files for some reason.

I expect I am missing some basic TrueImage concept, but any advise on how to easily reassure myself that backups under TrueImage 10 are working would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There is one way to no for sure your backup was successful and that is to use it to perform a resotre (a spare drive is handy for this). Then you know if the whole process is going to work onyour hardware set up -- this is true for any backup/imaging program. Once you have confirmed that, doing Validations is generally adequate to ensure that backup file is good. You can find out about Restores and Validations in the User Guide.

Thanks for the reply shieber. I have done a successful restore in the past when I first tried TI. But doing a restore after each/most backups to check it contains what you expected is a bit tedious. Not a quick and easy solution.

I had hoped the Event Log would say it had backed up XXX files and XXX MB's, and that you could easily get a list of the files with their date/time/size etc that it backed up.

If the answers are in the documentation feel free to point me to that.

Thanks again.

No, you don't have to do a test restore after every backup. You only need to do that once per ATI build to confirm that the version/build works with your hardware. After that validations are generally adequate. I think many of us rely on having multiple backups and successfully completed tasks as signs of successful backup creation and do not bother with validations (which actually only show whether a backup file is unchanged since creation). This is becuase ATI is meant to be able to backup while you are using and changing the content on a disk. In such a case, one couldn't go back and compare tot he original data since the original could have been intentionally changed. So Validation, as ATI does it, is the next best thing.

Validations are tedious too, especially since inc and diff validations check the entire set (full plus an related incs or diffs).

So is there no quick and easy way to get a list of what files have been backed up in an incremental backup?

ATI must know what files and the size of what it has backed up. Putting a simple message in the event log which said...
Backed up 237 files and 49MB

...would go a long way to reassuring me that the backup has worked.

Your suggestion is fine and nice to have.
Such a logging could be optional in Ti depend on a 'start'-parameter.

It will be an advantage fo both sides: The customer and Acronis.

I didn't read the whole 'wishlist-thread'. Is this suggestion included?
