On-demand AV scanner

Hello,

Does anyone know of an AV that does not install/run additional services even when it's not running? I'm currently using DefenseWall as my main resident protection, however, I would like to install an AV for occasional on-demand scans.

Any help would be appreciated.

ClamWin (http://www.clamwin.org/) is very light, open-source based on-demand only scanner. Dr.Web CureIt! (http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/) as well. And of course, there are lots of free online scans from major AV vendors, I'd personally recommend ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) from the NOD32 vendor.

Drweb cureit seems to fit.You would have to do a manual update every so often.

Bitdefender on demand runs services for auto updater as well.

Go for cureIT.... you can hassle yourself to download a new copy when doing scans if it is only occasional :)

Antivir-free (AVPE) (http://www.free-av.com/) runs just fine on-demand. No overhead whatsoever in on-demand mode. Simply...

1- Use Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) (it's free) to uncheck (a) avgnt.exe (system tray tool), and (b) avguard.exe (Antivir Service)

2- Once AVPE is installed, to manually update it thereafter, the simple way is to set-up a shortcut to the "preupd.exe" file located in your computer's AVPE folder.

NOTE 1: If you are on dial-up, do NOT use AVPE. The updates of sigs can be very large at times.

NOTE 2: At times the AVPE servers are VERY busy. At such times, the best time to update AVPE is usually between 12 AM to 4 AM Greenwich Mean Time (UTC) so that you are competing with fewer Europens for server access.

NOTE 3: At times, AVPE will update one or more of its main files. Afterward, AVPE will sometimes re-start AVPE to be real-time. If that occurs, simply exit AVPE using the system tray icon.

I believe antivir free actually has a scheduler service running automatically in the background by default. This can be easily switched to manual however you then have to manually start the service when you want to update avpe. This is what i found with v7, v8 may be different i don't know for sure.

I've installed Avira AntiVir Personal, and so far it is working beautifully. I had to leave the scheduler service running for product updates, however. Considering that it's detection rate is excellent, I'm fine with one service running :)
