Hi

Is there a good free video editor that preferably works with flv or MPEG2?

I tried VirtualDub but it didn't seem to be able to load those file types.

Thanks

The best alternative to VirtualDub is VirtualDub with the correct plug-ins! :P 8)

Mpeg2 Plugin (http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/index.html)

FLV Plugin (http://moitah.net/)

Virtual Dub is excellent, comes in x64 version which just flies on quad core PCs.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion! But I downloaded the flv one and put it in the plugins folder but it still can't load flv files! I think I'm missing something...

Thanks

You 're welcome :)

Make sure that you unzip it and put the file FLVInputDriver.vdplugin in the plugins directory.

Make sure that you run VirtualDub 1.8.0 or 1.8.1 since the plugin does not work with earlier versions.

Hi

I did that but it still doesn't work. I tried with 1.8.0 and 1.8.1.

Thanks

Probably you are missing the VP6 or VP7 codecs (they are commonly used in flv video containers).

Download the latest k-lite codec pack from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
http://www.codecguide.com/

prefer the full pack (it has not only the decoders but includes most of the encoders too) and since you want to do videoediting you will find it very usefull.

Hi

Is K Lite Mega Codec Pack the same thing?

And with the install, is the default options OK?

Thanks

Hi

I installed it and now VirtualDub can open flv files. However, all the features are gone! I can't edit it or do anything. Viewing it is the only thing I can do. Is this normal?

Thanks

Someone, you should consider first using a converter to convert your flv files, and then edit them.Any video converter free version works fine : link http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

About video editing software, I never found any of the free ones satisfacting, some people are saying that Jahshaka is good but I found it rather confusing. You may try it http://jahshaka.org/

Yes is normal. For eiting them you must first convert(remux) the FLV files into AVI.
Select:
Video -> Direct stream copy
Audio -> Direct stream copy
and then
File -> Save as AVI
It will take some seconds to remux it in the AVI format. After that open that AVI and you can edit it as you like. ;)

Not much, from what I tried. Usually converting in avi doesn't make a big quality difference. You may also try in wmv. I have converted flv-avi-wmv-flv and not seen a big quality difference. Anyway, See by yourself.:)

AviDemux. It'll load mpeg and flv without extra plugins.
