Is there a real time program that will protect while instant messaging?

Chatting via IM's is harmless. However clicking the URL's of an infected Buddy could initiate a downloader Trojan or other malware, so your resident AV/IS should protect you. I recall there being an option in MSN to put the path of your AV scanner. Always scan before you execute, and when in doubt upload the file(s) to VirusTotal or Virscan.org

Is this in regards to your other post where a link was presented via msn and clicked on?
Unless there is a vulnerability in MSN, the only way an infection can occur is if the link/file is clicked on and executed. This may be more about educating users rather than finding a security solution.

He ran Malwarebytes full scan in safe mode and supposedly found two root kits. I am communicating with him by phone which makes it difficult. I had him download ThreatFire.

There is an exploit that is dropping an entry point for IM bots so there are other ways to catch one .
