View Full Version : Spam?

Since registering at this forum yesterday, there's been an increase in the amount of spam that is getting through gmail's automatic spam filter.
I don't know if there's a connection, but this "security" forum is the first new site I've registered at using that email account in several weeks. Kind of ironic.

It would be interesting to hear from others on this.
Other than spam, I hope you get some useful stuff here.:)

I use Gmail and I fail to see how this forum could possibly affect Gmail's spam filter. It is their spam filter after all.

I wasn't suggesting that this forum would have affected gmail's spam filter. Obviously it can't.
I was questioning whether somehow registering at the forum might have led to my email address getting picked up by spammers who are not yet recognized by gmail's spam filters (which in my experience are very good.)

These forums are widely read and anything is possible I suppose. However, if you are very active on the internet, spam could be coming from anywhere.
Of course you can help adjust the spam filter on Gmail by reporting the spam.
You can be sure of one thing though, these forums do not spam anyone.

Oh I wasn't questioning if the forum itself was spamming or provinding my email to others. They'd be insane to do that.
Was just noting the coincidence.

I have to agree with the above responses. I can't see how your registering here has anything to do with a decrease in gmail's spam filtering effectiveness. Perhaps there just happens to be a temporary change in the filters effectiveness, as can be the case in the leapfrog game that spammers and filter writers play as they struggle to match each other.
The only way your email would be seen by anyone here is if you put it in the optional contact information field, one of the IM fields, or enable the vCard download in your profile.

"Post hoc ergo proctor hoc" -- the Latin might be misspelled, it's been a decade -- is the fallacy above referenced, folks.
Back to the germane: frankly I consider this forum a mitzvah. So, miss, what else have you done [on the World Wide Wait] lately?
Love,
Peregrine

??
really?
I have an account that is setup just to test email to/from clients - it is NEVER used as a general box or for everyday use - each time I log into it (every couple of weeks) - I see at least a couple of hundred new spam msgs... and I wonder how they ever got the address!

Let me clarify. I never look in the spam box. I did look this morning and got the message below.
So far, I have received no spam in my inbox.

Hello,
I suspect this has more to do with vulnerabilities in the security of Google's Gmail than anything to do with this forum. As mentioned here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/10/web_mail_throttled/) a couple of months ago, the technique GMail uses to prevent fraudulant sign-ups has been cracked, allowing spammers to more easily abuse this mail provider. I have a GMail account and have noticed an increase in spam over the past few weeks that has made it through Google's own spam filters.
I suspect it is just a temporary problem until Google introduces new security measures to resolve the vulnerability.

Aryeh Goretsky

I get a lot of spam at gmail but their spam filter stops 100% of it before it ever gets to my inbox :thumb:

Same here as bigc.
A lot of spam on Gmail, but that started way before I joined Wilders.
Since then, haven't start getting spam in the inbox.

Heheh,
"...propter hoc." Otherwise, you got it just right. It is one of the most common causal fallacies.
Yours,
David
