When your dad knows more than you...

I'd asked in an earlier thread about choosing some security software for my parents and was looking at Norton 360/Windows OneCare. Well, I got a copy of OneCare, and I called my dad so he could start using it.

Well, it turns out he's already installed Comodo antivirus and is thinking of getting their firewall and other products. He then proceeded to tell me that he has no need for a commercial antivirus and that *I* should swich. He is also trialling Tuneup utilities and is thinking of buying it as well. Needless to say, my whole 'easy to use for novice parents' idea didn't work out.

My reaction during the whole conversation - ??? :doubt: :o

I have a sneaking suspicion this is not the last I hear of this though.

Yea, I had a similar experience with my pop. Any hips or firewall outbound program control drives him up the wall---and me for having to listen to it! He uses MSN premium and gets Mcafee free, so that is what he runs. It keeps quiet
and he's happy. I made the mistake of showing him KIS years ago and he went ballistic cause it is Russian based. Guess him being in the military during the cold war hasn't worn off yet...lol:thumb:

then again remember comodo antivirus is stil in beta and way behind other antivirus programs. maybe you can tell him that its still in beta and not to fullu trust it yet?

You need to tell your father Comodo AV is not a good choice.
A college classmate asked me for a recommendation for a free AV for he was using Comodo av, and as I told him to use Avira AV, he came back the next day saying it detected a bunch of junk Comodo missed :/

Yes comodo av is quite bad from recent tests. I think hey may be better off with Onecare. If he wants a free one, theres always AVG, Avast and Avira.

Lol my dad uses Avira Free (tweaked by me so that it automatically deletes malware) in his business laptop, and KIS (tweaked like Avira) in his personal laptop.

There's no chance of my dad knowing more than me! :D

Don't trash your old man. He might be smarter than you give him credit for. Remember ' Dad always knows better " , that is only if & when he begins to take an interest in security-related issues. I have a software engineer child & can vouch for it.

If your father gets Comodo firewall, I hope he is either more knowledgeable about firewalls than I am (wouldn't take much) or a lot more patient than I am or both. I tried Comodo firewall once (after having only ever used ZA free) and I found it confusing and very, very annoying. (It would never remember my answers to it's pop-ups for one thing). That was before it had D+ too.

I agree with the comments so far - I do NOT want him to use the Comodo antivirus and esp not their firewall (or any complex firewall for that matter). He is behind a router so as far as I am concened the Windows firewall is more than enough.

I will try and convince him to use OneCare instead. Tried dong remote control to his pc but his internet speed is very slow so it didn't quite work out.

If he wants no commercial AV, it might be easier to convince him to ditch comodo AV if you present him other free av's.
