View Full Version : SpywareBlaster 4.1 released!

SpywareBlaster 4.1 has been released!
Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!
New in this version:
-Mozilla Firefox 3 support
-Numerous bug fixes and tweaks
This 4.1 release provides enhanced protection, performance, and bug fixes.
UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.
SpywareBlaster also offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution. Just set it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and enable the newest protection (other options are available).
As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates function remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.
SpywareBlaster is freeware.
Download the latest version here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
System Requirements: Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Vista.
Enjoy! ;D
Best regards,
-Javacool
P.S. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to post.

Can this be installed over the previous version? Or do we need to uninstall the old and install this?

{QUOTE-> Can this be installed over the previous version? Or do we need to uninstall the old and install this? <-QUOTE}
Hi,
Either should work, but we do recommend a clean install (uninstall the old + then install the new) if you haven't done it in a while.

After a clean install - i.e. first disabling all protection, then removing via
Add/Remove and then installing, the database loaded after updating
remains at 10421 items dated 6/3/2008. Why is this ?

Hi,
That database date is correct, and is the database release that is included with the SpywareBlaster 4.1 installer.
It was the most recent database release that cleared the testing process that goes into new releases. :)
The first post-4.1 database update will be released relatively soon, and you'll be able to get it via the integrated Check for Updates feature and SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate.
EDIT: I should also add that the database release date is currently displayed in the common U.S. date format: MM/DD/YYYY. So 6/3/2008 is June 3rd, 2008.

According to javacool in post #8 above, either installing over the top (as you did) or uninstalling and doing a fresh install should work. He does recommend doing a fresh install though.
If everything seems to be working as it should, then I would leave it alone if I were you. If the way you did it makes you uncomfortable, then disabling all protections, uninstalling and installing again should be good too.

It's just a misread by AVG??
I submitted the sbautoupdate.exe file to Grosoft for further analysis and received this reply:
AVG Anti-virus Research Lab has analyzed the file(s) you have sent from your AVG Virus Vault. Below you can find the results for each file. The final verdict on the file is either a correct detection or a false positive detection.
Further information about the verdicts are available at our website: http://www.avg.com/faq-1184
"D:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\sbautoupdate.exe" - detection is correct
I don't have a paid verson so I am unable to get a response from Javacoolsoftware to confirm whether it is a false positive or a Torjan horse Dropper.Agent.IPC. (and I realize since I don't have the paid version I am not able to use that feature) but I want to find the correct answer from a company representative.
Has someone with a Paid version submitted the problem to Javacoolsoftware?
I am submitting the file to Grosoft for deeper analysis.
Off to get more info from AVG regarding this.

I have been using SpywareBlaster for awhile now and loving it. Today I received message of 4.1 update; so I first disabled all protection, then removed old version via Add/Remove and then started the download of 4.1 from CNet. The first time I did get the download (saving to my desktop); but the file was "corrupt", so I could not get it installed. I read somewhere my security setting might not be letting it download; but not sure what to do there. (I run windows XP with SP2, IE7 and internet security is set at med-high. I am on "dial-up" without access to any other internet connection.)
Can anyone help me get this new SpywareBlaster downloaded and installed?

Hi,
This has unfortunately happened in the past, and is indeed a false positive.
I'll work on contacting the anti-virus companies affected to try to get them to fix it. If anyone using a product that has this false positive could do the same, it would be incredibly helpful.
The legitimate sbautoupdate.exe file is digitally signed by "Javacool Software LLC", and has the following checksums:
MD5: 5D0E5821EB35CDA9C320C1BDF1A4B695

Installation was very quick and easy -- on my second computer.
I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, and I didn't shut it down on the first computer before installing Spywareblaster. With the Kaspersky Proactive Defense running, it took more than an hour to "allow" each item of Spywareblaster to install. So a note in the installation instructions to shut down Internet security software would have been helpful.
Also, I uninstalled the previous version of Spywareblaster, but during installation of v 4.1 the previous install folder was still present. And my hosts safe backup and system snapshot backup were also left over from the previous version. I deleted the leftover backups and made new ones.

Hi,
What version of Windows are you running?
Also, what other security/privacy software are you running? (i.e. anti-virus, anti-trojan, other anti-spyware, firewall, cleaning tools, etc.)
The behavior you described is often caused by "active" or "behavioral" protection modules in other security software that intercept most everything, even when they probably don't have to. A common culprit in the past has been Spy Sweeper.
(Today's update was solely an update for the Restricted Sites protection in SpywareBlaster.)

I am running XP(Home)SP2. Avast, Threatfire, and ZoneAlarm are all active on my system but have never interefered with SpywareBlaster in the past. I have other security programs but they only run on demand and were not active when I updated SpywareBlaster.
I have not yet attempted updating SpywareBlaster on my other system which is set up nearly identically to this one. I will try it with Threatfire suspended (most likely culprit for interference of any that I have) and see how it goes. It won't really tell me for sure that TF interfered on this system but it might tell me if the problem is with SpywareBlaster itself if it still happens. Maybe it was just a one time glitch. I will get back to you with what happens.
Thanks for your quick reply to my post.

SpywareBlaster updated to the latest protections without incident on my other system with TF suspended. So either TF was interfering and slowing it down on the one system (never has before) or maybe it was just a one time glitch on that system.

I did a system restore back two days, then re-tried getting version 4.1 of SpywareBlaster from the geeks. It downloaded well in a matter of minutes (even for dial-up) and installed beautifully. (As stated in my previous post, I had cleaned the older version out prior to this.)
All is working well now. I never received any responses in here to my inquiry; but I am still glad you are all here for people and will not hesitate to visit again should the need arises.

Sorry you didn't get a reply to your first post. It happens occasionally but usually help is offered pretty quickly here.
If your only problem was that the downloaded file was corrupt and couldn't be used then you probably only needed to delete it and download it again or download it from a different location.

Dear Javacool
I tried to install the new spywareblaster, but there were several problems. First of all, there was a trojan attached to it (Trojan.Agent.AZIM) ! I tried downloading it from 2 of of the 3 places listed - and the trojan was the same each time.
Secondly there was a file it could not install - code 2 was mentioned and consequently the programme cannot work without this file.
I've never had any problems with installing spywareblaster before, but this time - trojan AND a a bad file.....
So until further notice I am still using the last version, cause this version it does not seem that I can use !

Good for the browser IE and Firefox exceptions listings, cookies and rouge files. System clean then use spyware blaster. Use it when you first build a system. Still need spyware terminator, I always wonder if that one worked or not. My firewall seems to detect more code injection with prompts before they can hop on for a ride on the system then neither of these two to stop bad cookies.

The restricted sites protection works by stopping your browser from contacting those web addresses - if you try to access a site from the protected list you should see a blank screen and no error message. The browser thinks it has resolved the address but never actually contacts the blocked website.
As for testing it is working: Make sure all protection shows as enabled on the SpywareBlaster front page - then test a couple of sites from the restricted list to make sure you just get a blank page.

{QUOTE-> then something isn't working. www.adbrite.com does not give me a blank screen with either FF or IE <-QUOTE}As you may know, restricted sites in SB's database are simply added to the Internet Explorer Restricted Zone. With that said, a user can visit Restricted Sites but certain html code will not be rendered because it has been restricted. A blank screen would be synonomous with a Hosts file.

Hi,
A few notes about the Restricted Sites protection:
-It applies to Internet Explorer (and other Internet Explorer-based browsers, such as AOL, etc.)
-It doesn't completely block access to a site. Instead, it limits what a site can do if you visit it (i.e. it blocks scripting, browser exploits, downloads, etc).
EDIT: Looks like Bubba beat me to it. 8)

Hi Javacool,
I have a question. In the EULA for Spyware Blaster 4.1 it says that it is only for home use unless you get special permission. However, I work in the IT dept. for a medium-size non-profit business and we would really like to have permission to use Spyware Blaster on the PC's here in the office. (There are about 150 at the moment). We sent an email to javacool and never got a reply back. Could you let me know what we need to do to get the permission to install SB 4.1?
Thanks!

Hi there,
Since Safari was released for Windows i have started to use Safari as my default browser. Because it's Sooooo fast and i like the interface etc etc.
So my question of course is,
will Safari be included in the browser protection list in later versions?
Not only because I use Safari, but since more and more people are getting their eyes on Safari and start using it. It's a very nice browser :).
By the way, I will soon change from PC to MAC and would like to take SB with me :)
So will their come a MAC version as well at some point?

I run an XP with multiple desktop users - one for each member of the family. I've noticed that I need to login as each user and individually apply new updates. I do not have to download the updates for each user as, IIRC, we did with v3.x. Anyway we can get an update that allows global enabling of all protections for all users?
Thanks

Hi,
Certain portions of SpywareBlaster's protection are global (i.e. machine-specific). Other portions are indeed user-specific, and will need to be enabled for each user account on your machine.
The easiest way to automate this is with SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate, available here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbautoupdate.html

Blaster 4.0 and 4.1 will NOT run on Win98SE. I have two systems running that OS and in both cases when it attempts to apply the blockers for Firefox it locks up and will not shutdown or be removed. Earlier versions where fine.

Peter1a,
On the contrary - SpywareBlaster 4.1 does work on Win98SE. I currently use it on my Win98SE system and it works fine, including manually updating Firefox protection. I have not had any problem whatsoever with it, so perhaps the problem you're having is being caused by something else within your OS, not SpywareBlaster specifically.

I too have SpywareBlaster v4.1 running on Win98SE. The problem mentioned is most likely caused by either a corruption in Firefox registry settings or having the buggy version of Spybot S&D installed.
I would suggest the following sequence to clear the problem:
Disable all protections and un-install Spyware Blaster.
Update Spybot if installed - the new v1.6 scans much faster anyway.
Uninstall and re-install Firefox to reset all it's registry settings.
Re-install Spyware Blaster and re-enable protections.
Firefox seems to be rather prone to corrupted registry settings under W98se - I have seen a number of very odd problems that required a remove and reinstall.

I have a new computer.
I installed a new version of Spyware Blaster having always used it and then updated it to version 4.1.and have paid for auto-update.
I now use Kaspersky Internet Security.
Since I installed Kaspersky on 15th July I have been unable to downlad any updates despite disabling Kaspersky.
I get messages telling me you can't establish a connection yet I am online and everything else is working fine.
I have also tried to connect with the websites given in the help section i.e. wilders and javasoft and I am unable to. What is happening?????
It certainly isn't happening with any other programme or website.
Please advise.
Thankyou.???

Hi,
I posted a thread about this, but got no response, so I thought I'd try it here (hope that's okay -- maybe this is the more appropriate place?). Thanks!
I'm presently using AVG Free 7.5 A/V, A/S, and Anti-Rootkit. I have Windows XP Home SP2. I'm going to be updating to AVG 8.0 Free at the end of the month. And I'm going to be ditching Spybot (I still have 1.4 installed), and would like to go with Spyware Blaster 4.1 instead. So I have a number of questions about it because I'm always worried/paranoid about installing new software and not messing anything up (or causing compatibility issues, etc.). :)
1. Any tips/instructions on installation/set-up/settings? I saw this excellent guide here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html (but it's outdated). Is there a newer one or other steps/things to consider?
2. Any compatibility issues with anything in general, or any of the following specifically?
Windows XP Home SP2
AVG 8.0 Free (have those all been addressed by AVG?)
ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.001
SuperAntispyware 4.15.1000
AdAware SE Free 1.06r1
Firefox 2.0.0.16 (I use this now)
Firefox 3.x (for future reference -- will upgrade in December)
IE 6.5 (used only for Windows Updates -- set for "High" security level with cookies off, except for Windows Update listed as safe site with Medium setting)
3. How easily does it uninstall, if ever needed? Cleanly and completely? Cause issues with anything else? How firmly embedded?
4. If your IE settings are already set to High and set to not allow Active X or cookies (except for Windows Update), should you still enable both the Active X and cookies protection? I'm guessing yes, but I just want to make sure that it doesn't do anything "bad" or contrary if you have those things set that way already? Same with Firefox... if I already have cookies turned off, does it do the opposite or something contrary if I also use the Firefox cookie protection in Spyware Blaster?
5. Does the program itself uses Java? I actually don't have Java installed on my computer... (Never had any need for it...) I only ask because the company is "Javacool". :) (Sorry if that's a dumb question!)
6. What about the snapshot thing? Is that just the same as a system restore point? Any reason to do this?
7. Anything else I should know?
Thanks for fielding these newbie questions! :thumb:

Hi, i just wanna know why i can't use the fonction "Misc (IE...) Settings (In Tools)" with Firefox... if it's because the program didn't take the time for it or it's because Firefox can't handle it.
Otherwise, this program is awsome, i really like it!!!! :P :)
Many thanks to Javacool !!
(Sorry, my english is poor, cuz i'm french XD) :P

Hi freakphil,
In this context IE means Internet Explorer. These settings are for that browser exclusively, so they will not work for Firefox.
But the settings in Firefox are by far not as often a target for spyware so the need for such a tool is much less present.
I for one was unable to find an add-on that guards the settings, which is no guarantee that it does not exist. ;)
