I'm trying to decided which one to get. Which one would you recommend?

Ashampoo WinOptimizer

Neither is not an opinion I'm looking for.

I have used WinOptimizer 3 and 4. Actually I would only use it for cleaning junk files and defragging (in version 4, I believe). I just never trusted its registry cleaner and would not use it for that. I have not used Advanced System Optimizer.

Are you considering purchasing version 5 of WinOptimizer?

1. install each software separately
2. make a list of all the features
3. make a comparision
Take the one with the most features or the one with the features you need. :)

Ashampoo Burning Studio is good solid burner,with this one it take the hassle out of burning. Personally i never use optimisers suites,brrrr... dangerous ??!!

Advanced System Optimizer hands down because it has more features and its better compared to WinOptimizer IMO. Another one to try would be WinXP Manager, but if you are on Vista, then Vista Manager. I use both for different things.

Some of these click and apply tweaking type apps are ok but the best way to learn how to navigate a system IMHO is to google for tweaks and apply them manually through system settings and the registry.

If you do a search on slickdeals.net you can find ashampoo winoptimizer 4 for free. Ashampoo will then send you upgrade offers for version 5 for as low as $10-15 or so. If you are looking at spending $40-50 then you should seriously consider other options as well.

Personally I use System Tune Up from acelogix and it has worked flawlessly. It has never removed something it shouldn't in the two years I have used it. Plus it is a lifetime license and you can install it on as many computers as you own.

Besides System Tune Up there is JV16 Power Tools of Macecraft and TuneUp Utilities 2008 from tune-up.com. Any of those (combined with Ccleaner) would be better IMO than the two you are considering. Just my 2 cents worth.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little. I've used these programs before and none seemed particularly useful to me. Is there something I'm missing? What are they good for?

The programs are for what they say they are for. If they're not useful to you then don't use them. There's nothing you're missing.

Initially they were in the hairwashing business but due to circumstances beyond their control they were forced to leave and eventually enter the coding business were they became a miracle in its own right,releasing full featured soiftware packages every week thanks to the very fast and brilliant coders at their headquarters.Reckon me as a satisfied customer using their Ashampoo Burning Studio,custom build by them to serve my very special needs. It's not the first time I read good things about Ashampoo Burning Studio, but I hardly read anything about the other softwares of Ashampoo. :)

Oke serious,I think they create good stuff in a wide range from burning to office,never used them,except their burning software which is Oke.
I only wonder how they get the power to release constantly new softwares,in their collection only imaging is missing. ;)

Their AV is an OEM of Avira (looks closer to the free avira as opposed to Avira Personal Premium) and their AS is an OEM of A-squared without the malware IDS or whatever it is.

None of these 'Windows optimizer' programs have any measurable impact on your system. Most of them do include other utilties like registry editor, startup programs listing, tweaking some obscure display settings for Windows etc, and these may be important to some.

But as far as system performance goes, on any decent hardware there is no value to using these IMO for the cost, and in fact you may even cause harm.

I used to be one of those people who would spend endless time looking for the best tweaks, defragmenting, tune up utiltities etc. You end up spending more time doing this than actual useful work, and it really makes little or no difference.

Indeed. If you don't write all your tweakings down and you have to re-install from scratch, you can start all over again with tweaking your system. :)

Largely true with Xp and onwards

Most of these apps are mainly useful for maintenance work.

Three apps which may improve performance in some specialised areas are;

TuneUpXP-Ulimate Defragger ,both combine to give improved startups and theoretically HD read/write times-and SG TCP Optimiser-which optimises connection settings.

I bought Jv16 Powertools (macecraft.com) recently. Program easy to install & understand. Helps remove a lot of things that take up a lot of space on your computer. I would recommend this product, very highly.

If you'r in need of a cleaner,CCleaner,ATF Cleaner and KCleaner comes to mind,all excelent and free.
KCleaner is at the moment a hot shot,developper actively participating and responding quickly to suggestions and questions.
