I have had no issues with any Linksys WRT series I have owned and find their support on those rare times I used it to be very good.

Same here, I have my Netgear for over two years and no problem so far, nevertheless I cannot say it's the best router in the world.:-\

The one you can figure out how to use.
All others will be useless.

I didn't ask myself : "What is the best modem router in the world ?"
I installed one that was compatible with my cable connection in Belgium : D-Link DI-604 = €39.00
I don't know anything about routers, I'm too stupid.
Meanwhile this router is already discontinued and I installed the latest firmware and I was lucky it was still working after that.
I know it DOES something, because it has quite an extensive log, but I don't understand that log and all these settings, it's so embarrassing. :-[

"what is the best modem router in the world?"
None of those that you have listed.
Just about all those brands you have listed up there...are "home market" brands....so that eliminates them from being "best in the world". Because "best in the world"...brings big iron enterprise brands to the table..such as Cisco, Juniper, Foundry, etc.
I'm guessing you're only talking about broadband at home though...so which do you have? Because a combo modem/router is meant for either DSL, or cable. A plain router itself (withOUT the modem combo built in)..can be used for either..assuming it has ethernet on the WAN interface.
I don't believe Belkin makes a combo modem/router..so that should probably be scrubbed off of the list.
Speedstream and Siemens....one 'n the same.

I use apple airport extreme and it runs nice. Never felt i like i had a router. one caveat: It has No stealth firewall but keeps all ports closed. So far no problem encountered since i bought it in sep 07.

Stealthed ports are a little over rated I think. Not really any less secure than closed ports.

The OP did not state the purpose/environment for the "best modem router in the world". Without knowing the intended use for this, the type of broadband, the amount of users, the firewall requirements, etc etc...the question is impossible to answer.
It's like asking "What's the best transportation in the world?" Uhhhh..for what? Getting 1 person from point a to point be the fastest? Or on the least amount of gas? Or hauling cargo? Or transporting a family of 7? Or...or...or....

They have become common over here in the Unites States..from DSL ISPs. Pretty much 1x little box...DSL jack for the WAN, 1 or 4x LAN ports for the inside. Just a single box that combines both the DSL bridge/modem, and a little basic router.
Even though the actual router component is usually quite limited in functionality, features, and performance...it's a good thing. Since they started deploying these..the amount of malware infections we'd see has gone down. Prior to that, the average home user just had their PC plugged into the DSL modem/bridge...with the PC obtaining a public IP address...thus..well, ya know....infection city...

Not quite. Its like asking "What is the best transportation in the world?" in a sports car enthusiast forum with a poll for sports car brands. I'd assume that we were talking about sports cars and not trucks or planes :P

Ah, can't vote, I have a separate modem and router, they are both D-Link and work fine. D-Link because they were on sale and had good reviews.

Not quitex2. It remains just as vague....again, still, we weren't given requirements, connection type, firewall needs, amount of computers being protected, etc etc etc.
And...to me..."best transportation in the world" means the same thing...be in a sports car forum...a GT forum...an Austin Healey forum...an Alfa Romeo forum....a truck forum....a motorcycle forum....a powerboat forum...a sailboat forum....a train forum...a hangglider forum...

It depends, what defines best, easiest to set up, best protection, wireless, encryption, speed, signal b, g or n? Hopefully all of these but most importantly whatever works best for you. The home and network may dictate to what you should purchase. Perhaps your a prolific P2Per - some may not handle this well where others I've seen have this in mind with even there own storage...think about how you use your computer, decide what your network looks like then compare.
Side-by-side comparisons help, on-line or mags. Some of the UTM manufacturers also make some nice modem routers - Zyxel, Netgear...
