View Full Version : AntiVir Personal not updating since May 30 (Guard left not running)

AntiVir Personal has not been able to update since May 30. It goes through the different servers each time I try an update for abut 5 or 6 minutes until it actually connects and starts the download. The download comes in slow but finishes successfully. The updates says "Updater is stopping applications..." forever. I am left without the Guard running and it is greyed out and unable to start again. I restart the computer and the update does not take. This has been happening every day.

I understand that there was an engine update around May 30 which explains the slow servers as I am very accustomed to the slow server issues after major updates because I have been using AntiVir Personal for a few years now.

However, I think AntiVir has a HUGE problem on theirs hands if millions of computers are left without the Guard running. This has been happening consistently after trying manual updates 3 or 4 times in the past few days.

Aside from the slow servers issue, is anybody else affected right now from the never-ending update issue with Guard left not running?

Thanks,
Dave

I have not encountered a similar problem. I suggest that you go to the Avira site, download the new version, then install it "over" the old version.

Check the Avira forum for additional information. Check for firewall and other anti-malware programs on your machine for conflicts- which is the most common cause. Uninstall, clear the registry with CCleaner, and reinstall. That should do the trick.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I ended up downloading the ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip file from the AntiVir server and opening the GUI and selecting Manual Update and navigating to the location of the downloaded zip file. This method did the trick and fixed the problem. The definitions and engine updated to the correct up-to-date versions.

I will have to see over the next few days if updates continue to work or not on their own. If the problem starts again, I will do a clean install of AntiVir at that point.

Thanks,
Dave

Exactly the same thing occurred with me using the most current version. I tried several times to update, but to no avail. I have one laptop running Avir and one running avast!, and I never have any problems with avast! I wish Avir's update service was as seamless and easy as avast!

Installed AntiVir PE yesterday on my daughters lappy and had no update issues, neither manual nor scheduled.

I've been experiencing the same problem using the Premium edition

It stops at "Updater is stopping applications" and stays there until I reboot the system.

Manually updating doesn't help either. Yes, it updates the definitions but the next time it tries to auto-update, it gets stuck at "Updater is stopping applications" again.

Do you have other protection software installed, a firewall, behaviour blocker and so on?

I once had a problem with the guard not working, found out later it was because
I had disabled "event log" in windows services.

So just incase make sure you have event log service enabled in the windows services.

Never had problems updating with avira. Only thing that bothers me is why the umbrella takes a while to open after a boot/ reboot, usually around 5 to 10 seconds before the umbrella opens up. Anyone else have encountered this with XPSP3?

No, none of the above. I have always used a router for inbound protection only and no settings have been changed. The only thing different on my PC setup would have to be Service Pack 3 for Windows XP.

Here we are again today, stuck on "Updater is stopping applications..." and I am left without any protection as the Guard is not running again.

I am really starting to get concerned because I also have this installed on several other people's machines and I am really starting to question AntiVir's reliability at this point.

EDIT: Why can't Avira stop it's own applications?
Is there any kind of process protection built in to AntiVir that would be causing this?

Thanks,
Dave

Please check the reports on the failed updates, are there error codes in the log?
